The Builders of the Walls 1At the Sheep Gate, Eliashib (God restores) the high priest and his fellow priests began rebuilding. They dedicated it and installed its doors. After building as far as the Tower of the Hundred (hundred) and the Tower of Hananel (God has favored), they dedicated the wall. 2The men of Jericho (city of palms) built next to Eliashib, and Zaccur (mindful) son of Imri (eloquent) built next to them. 3The Fish Gate was rebuilt by the sons of Hassenaah (thorny). They laid its beams and installed its doors, bolts, and bars. 4Next to them, Meremoth (elevations) son of Uriah (YHWH is my light), the son of Hakkoz (thorn), made repairs. Next to him, Meshullam (friend) son of Berechiah (YHWH blesses), the son of Meshezabel (God delivers), made repairs; and next to him, Zadok (righteous) son of Baana (in the affliction) made repairs as well. 5Next to him, the Tekoites made repairs, but their nobles did not put their shoulders to the work under their supervisors (their Lord).a 6The Jeshanah Gate (The Old City Gate)b was repaired by Joiada (YHWH knows) son of Paseah (limper) and Meshullam (friend) son of Besodeiah (with counsel of YHWH). They laid its beams and installed its doors, bolts, and bars. 7Next to them, repairs were made by Melatiah (YHWH delivered) the Gibeonite (little hill), Jadon (thankful) the Meronothite (joyful shouter), and the men of Gibeon (hill city) and Mizpah (watchtower), who were under the authority of the governor of the region west of the Euphrates \the governor beyond the River/.c 8Next to them, Uzziel (my strength is God) son of Harhaiah (fear of YHWH), one of the goldsmiths, made repairs. And next to him, Hananiah (God has favored), one of the perfumers, made repairs. They fortified Jerusalem (city of peace) as far as the Broad Wall. 9Next to them, Rephaiah (healed of YHWH) son of Hur (hole), ruler of a half-district of Jerusalem (city of peace), made repairs; 10next to him, Jedaiah (praised of YHWH) son of Harumaph (split nose) made repairs across from his house; and next to him, Hattush (assembled) son of Hashabneiah (whom YHWH regards) made repairs. 11Malchijah (my king is YHWH) son of Harim (dedicated) and Hasshub (considerate) son of Pahath-moab (pit of Moab) repaired another section, as well as the Tower of the Ovens. 12And next to them, Shallum (retribution) son of Hallohesh (whisperer), ruler of the other half-district of Jerusalem (city of peace), made repairs, with the help of his daughters. 13The Valley Gate was repaired by Hanun (gracious) and the residents of Zanoah (cast off). They rebuilt it, installed its doors, bolts, and bars, and repaired a thousand cubits <1,500 ft / 457.2 m>d of the wall as far as the Dung Gate. 14The Dung Gate was repaired by Malchijah (my king is YHWH) son of Rechab (rider), ruler of the district of Beth-haccherem (house of the vineyard). He rebuilt it and installed its doors, bolts, and bars. 15The Fountain Gate was repaired by Shallun [Shallum]e son of Col-hozeh (all-seeing), ruler of the district of Mizpah (watchtower). He rebuilt it, roofed it, and installed its doors, bolts, and bars. He also repaired the wall of the Pool of Shelah (Pool of Shelah)f near the king’s garden, as far as the stairs that descend from the City of David (beloved). 16Beyond him, Nehemiah (YHWH comforts) son of Azbuk (strong devastation), ruler of a half-district of Beth-zur (house of the rock), made repairs up to a point opposite the tombs of David (beloved), as far as the artificial pool and the House of the Mighty. 17Next to him, the Levites made repairs under Rehum (compassion) son of Bani (built), and next to him, Hashabiah (YHWH has considered), ruler of a half-district of Keilah (fortress), made repairs for his district. 18Next to him, their countrymen made repairs under Binnui [Bavvai]g son of Henadad (favor of Hadad), ruler of the other half-district of Keilah (fortress). 19And next to him, Ezer (treasure) son of Jeshua (he is saved), ruler of Mizpah (watchtower), repaired another section opposite the ascent to the armory, near the angle in the wall. 20Next to him, Baruch (blessed) son of Zabbai (pure) diligently repaired another section, from the angle to the doorway of the house of Eliashib (God restores) the high priest. 21Next to him, Meremoth (elevations) son of Uriah (YHWH is my light), the son of Hakkoz (thorn), repaired another section, from the doorway of the house of Eliashib (God restores) to the end of the house. 22And next to him, the priests from the surrounding area made repairs. 23Beyond them, Benjamin (son of the right hand) and Hasshub (considerate) made repairs in front of their house, and next to them, Azariah (YHWH has helped) son of Maaseiah (work of YHWH), the son of Ananiah (YHWH clouds), made repairs beside his house. 24After him, Binnui (built up) son of Henadad (favor of Hadad) repaired another section, from the house of Azariah (YHWH has helped) to the angle and the corner, 25and Palal (He has judged) son of Uzai (I shall have my sprinklings) made repairs opposite the angle and the tower that juts out from the upper palace of the king near the courtyard of the guard. Next to him, Pedaiah (YHWH has ransomed) son of Parosh (flea) 26and the temple servants \the Nethinim/h living on the hill of Ophel (hill) made repairs opposite the Water Gate toward the east and the tower that juts out. 27And next to them, the Tekoites repaired another section, from a point opposite the great tower that juts out to the wall of Ophel (hill). 28Above the Horse Gate, each of the priests made repairs in front of his own house. 29Next to them, Zadok (righteous) son of Immer (he has said) made repairs opposite his house, and next to him, Shemaiah (heard by YHWH) son of Shecaniah (dweller with YHWH), the guard of the East Gate, made repairs. 30Next to him, Hananiah (God has favored) son of Shelemiah (repaid by YHWH), as well as Hanun (gracious) the sixth son of Zalaph (wound), repaired another section. Next to them, Meshullam (friend) son of Berechiah (YHWH blesses) made repairs opposite his own quarters. 31Next to him, Malchijah (my king is YHWH), one of the goldsmiths, made repairs as far as the house of the temple servants and the merchants, opposite the Inspection Gate, and as far as the upper room above the corner. 32And between the upper room above the corner and the Sheep Gate, the goldsmiths and merchants made repairs.
