Jesus Heals the Man Born Blind

1And passing by, He saw a man blind from birth. 2And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should be born blind?”

3Jesus answered, “Neither this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God should be displayed in him. 4It is necessary for us to work the works of the One having sent Me while it is day; night is coming, when no one is able to work. 5When I shall be in the world, I am the light of the world.”

6Having said these things, He spit on the ground and made clay of the spittle, and He applied the clay to his eyes. 7And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). Therefore he went away and washed, and he came seeing.

8Therefore the neighbors and those seeing him before, that he was a beggar, were saying, “Is this not the one sitting and begging?”

9Others were saying, “This is he.” Others, were saying, “No, but he is like him.”

He was saying, “I am he.”

10Therefore they were saying to him, “How then were your eyes opened?”

11He answered, “The man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes, and He said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ Therefore, having gone away and having washed, I received sight.”

12“And they said to him, “Where is He?”

He says, “I do not know.”

The Pharisees Investigate the Healing

13They bring him who once was blind to the Pharisees. 14Now it was a Sabbath—the day on which Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. 15Again, therefore, the Pharisees also were asking him how he received sight.

And he said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”

16Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.”

But others were saying, “How is a man, a sinner, able to do such signs?”

And there was division among them. 17Therefore they say to the blind man again, “What do you say about Him, because He opened your eyes?”

And he said, “He is a prophet.”

18Therefore the Jews did not believe concerning him that he was blind and received sight, until they called the parents of him having received sight 19and asked them, saying, “Is this your⁺ son, of whom you⁺ say that he was born blind? Then how presently does he see?”

20Therefore his parents answered and said, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. 21But how he sees now, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him. He has age. He will speak concerning himself.”

22His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews already had agreed together that if anyone should confess Him as Christ, he would be expelled from the synagogue. 23Because of this, his parents said, “He has age. Ask him.”

24Therefore they called out a second time the man who was blind, and they said to him, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.”

25Therefore he answered, “Whether He is a sinner I do not know. One thing I know, that being blind, now I see!”

26Therefore they said to him, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?”

27He answered them, “I told you⁺ already, and you⁺ did not hear. Why again do you⁺ want to hear? Do you⁺ also want to become His disciples?”

28And they reviled him and said, “You are a disciple of that One, but we are disciples of Moses. 29We know that God has spoken to Moses, but we do not know from where this man is.”

30The man answered and said to them, “In this, indeed, is an amazing thing, that you⁺ do not know from where He is, and He opened my eyes. 31We know that God does not hear sinners, but if anyone may be God-fearing and may do His will, He hears him. 32From the age it was not heard that anyone opened the eyes of one having been born blind. 33If this man were not from God, He would be able to do nothing.”

34They answered and said to him, “You were born entirely in sins, and do you teach us?” And they cast him out.

Spiritual Blindness

35Jesus heard that they cast him out, and having found him, He said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

36He answered and said, “And who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?”

37Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him, and He is the One speaking with you.”

38And he was saying, “I believe, Lord.” And he worshiped Him.

39And Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, so that those not seeing may see and those seeing may become blind.”

40Some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things, and they said to Him, “Are we also blind?”

41Jesus said to them, “If you⁺ were blind, you⁺ would not have sin. But now that you⁺ say, ‘We see,’ your⁺ sin remains.”
