The Boundaries of Canaan
(Genesis 15:8–21)

1And YHWH spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Command the sons of Israel, and say to them: When you⁺ come into the land of Canaan, this is the land that shall fall to you⁺ as an inheritance—the land of Canaan to its boundaries:

3And your⁺ border on the Negev shall be from the Wilderness of Zin along the border of Edom, and your⁺ border on the Negev shall extend to the end of the Salt Sea† eastward. 4And your⁺ border shall turn from the Negev to the Ascent of Akrabbim† and continue to Zin, and the going forth will be from the Negev to Kadesh-barnea, and it shall go on to Hazar-addar and continue to Azmon. 5And the border shall turn from Azmon to the Brook of Egypt, and will be its outer limits to the Sea.†

6And as for the western border, the Great Sea shall be to you⁺ for a border; this shall be your⁺ western border.

7And this shall be your⁺ northern border: From the Great Sea you⁺ shall mark out to you⁺ to Mount Hor. 8From Mount Hor you⁺ shall mark out to Lebo-hamath; and the direction of the border shall be toward Zedad; 9and the border shall proceed to Ziphron, and it shall end at Hazar-enan. This shall be unto you⁺ the northern border.

10And you⁺ shall mark out your⁺ eastern border from Hazar-enan to Shepham, 11and the border shall go down from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of Ain, and the border shall go down and reach to the eastern side of the Sea of Chinnereth.† 12And the border shall go down along the Jordan, and it shall end at the Salt Sea.

This shall be to you⁺ the land with its boundaries all around.”

13And Moses commanded the sons of Israel, saying, “This is the land that you shall inherit by lot, which YHWH has commanded to give to the nine tribes and to the half-tribe; 14for the tribe of the sons of the Reubenite has received according to the house of their fathers, and the tribe of the sons of the Gadite according to the house of their fathers, and the half-tribe of Manasseh has received its inheritance. 15The two tribes and the half-tribe have received their inheritance on this side of the Jordan near Jericho eastward, toward the sunrise.”

Leaders to Divide the Land

16And YHWH spoke to Moses, saying, 17“These are the names of the men who shall divide as an inheritance among you⁺ the land: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun. 18And one leader—one leader from a tribe—you⁺ shall take to distribute the land. 19And these are the names of the men:

From the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;

20and from the tribe of the sons of Simeon, Shemuel son of Ammihud;

21from the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad son of Chislon;

22and from the tribe of the sons of Dan, a leader Bukki son of Jogli;

23from the sons of Joseph, from the tribe of the sons of Manasseh, a leader, Hanniel son of Ephod;

24and from the tribe of the sons of Ephraim, a leader, Kemuel son of Shiphtan;

25and from the tribe of the sons of Zebulun, a leader, Elizaphan son of Parnach;

26and from the tribe of the sons of Issachar, a leader, Paltiel son of Azzan;

27and from the tribe of the sons of Asher, a leader, Ahihud son of Shelomi;

28and from the tribe of the sons of Naphtali, a leader, Pedahel son of Ammihud.”

29These are those whom YHWH commanded among the sons of Israel to divide the inheritance in the land of Canaan.
