ContextA Judgment Against Judah
…13The Lord standeth up to judge, and he standeth to judge the people. 14The Lord will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and its princes: for you have devoured the vineyard, and the spoil of the poor is in your house.15Why do you consume my people, and grind the faces of the poor? saith the Lord the God of hosts.…
But you have dishonoured the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you by might? And do not they draw you before the judgment seats?
Shall he reprove thee for fear, and come with thee into judgment:
They have violently robbed the fatherless, and stripped the poor common people.
The murderer riseth at the very break of day, he killeth the needy, and the poor man: but in the night he will be as a thief.
His eyes are upon the poor man: He lieth in wait in secret like a lion in his den. He lieth in ambush that he may catch the poor man: to catch the poor, whilst he draweth him to him.
Shall not all they know that work iniquity, who devour my people as they eat bread?
A generation that for teeth hath swords, and grindeth with their jaw teeth, to devour the needy from off the earth, and the poor from among men.
For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel: and the man of Juda, his pleasant plant: and I looked that he should do judgment, and behold iniquity: and do justice, and behold a cry.
Woe to them that make wicked laws: and when they write, write injustice:
To oppress the poor in judgment, and do violence to the cause of the humble of my people: that widows might be their prey, and that they might rob the fatherless.
But he shall judge the poor with justice, and shall reprove with equity the meek of the earth: and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked.
And the firstborn of the poor shall be fed, and the poor shall rest with confidence: and I will make thy root perish with famine, and I will kill thy remnant.
The foot shall tread it down, the feet of the poor, the steps of the needy.
And the meek shall increase their joy in the Lord, and the poor men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
Therefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel: Because you have rejected this word, and have trusted in oppression and tumult, and have leaned upon it:
Behold you fast for debates and strife, and strike with the fist wickedly. Do not fast as you have done until this day, to make your cry to be heard on high.
That grieveth the needy and the poor, that taketh away by violence, that restoreth not the pledge, and that lifteth up his eyes to idols, that comitteth abomination:
And I will bring you into the wilderness of people, and there will I plead with you face to face.
As I pleaded against your fathers in the desert of the land of Egypt; even so will I judge you, saith the Lord God.
You that hate good, and love evil: that violently pluck off their skins from them and their flesh from their bones?
