Berean Study Bible | International Standard Version |
Why, O LORD, do You stand far off? Why do You hide in times of trouble? | 1 Why do you stand far away, LORD? Why do you hide in times of distress? |
In pride the wicked pursue the needy; let them be caught in the schemes they devise. | 2The wicked one arrogantly pursues the afflicted, who are trapped in the schemes he devises. |
For the wicked man boasts in the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD. | 3For the wicked one boasts about his own desire; he blesses the greedy and despises the LORD. |
In his pride the wicked man does not seek Him; in all his schemes there is no God. | 4With haughty arrogance, the wicked thinks, "God will not seek justice." He always presumes "There is no God." |
He is secure in his ways at all times; Your lofty judgments are far from him; he sneers at all his foes. | 5Their ways always seem prosperous. Your judgments are on high, far away from them. They scoff at all their enemies. |
He says to himself, “I will not be moved; from age to age I am free of distress.” | 6They say to themselves, "We will not be moved throughout all time, and we will not experience adversity." |
His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and violence; trouble and malice are under his tongue. | 7Their mouth is full of curses, lies, and oppression, their tongues spread trouble and iniquity. |
He lies in wait near the villages; in ambush he slays the innocent; his eyes watch in stealth for the helpless. | 8They wait in ambush in the villages, they kill the innocent in secret. |
He lies in wait like a lion in a thicket; he lurks to seize the oppressed; he catches the lowly in his net. | 9Their eyes secretly watch the helpless, lying in wait like a lion in his den. They lie in wait to catch the afflicted. They catch the afflicted when they pull him into their net. |
They are crushed and beaten down; the hapless fall prey to his strength. | 10The victim is crushed, and he sinks down; the helpless fall by their might. |
He says to himself, “God has forgotten; He hides His face and never sees.” | 11The wicked say to themselves, "God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it." |
Arise, O LORD! Lift up Your hand, O God! Do not forget the helpless. | 12Rise up, LORD! Raise your hand, God. Don't forget the afflicted! |
Why has the wicked man renounced God? He says to himself, “You will never call me to account.” | 13Why do the wicked despise God and say to themselves, "God will not seek justice."? |
But You have regarded trouble and grief; You see to repay it by Your hand. The victim entrusts himself to You; You are the helper of the fatherless. | 14But you do see! You take note of trouble and grief in order to take the matter into your own hand. The helpless one commits himself to you; you have been the orphan's helper. |
Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call him to account for his wickedness until none is left to be found. | 15Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; so that when you seek out his wickedness you will find it no more. |
The LORD is King forever and ever; the nations perish from His land. | 16The LORD is king forever and ever; nations will perish from his land. |
You have heard, O LORD, the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their hearts. You will incline Your ear, | 17LORD, you heard the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen them, you will listen carefully, |
to vindicate the fatherless and oppressed, that the men of the earth may strike terror no more. | 18to do justice for the orphan and the oppressed, so that men of the earth may cause terror no more. |
