Then Job answered: | 1Then Job replied: |
“I have heard many things like these; miserable comforters are you all. | 2"I have heard many things like these before. What miserable comforters are you all! |
Is there no end to your long-winded speeches? What provokes you to continue testifying? | 3Will there be an end to your windy words? Or what provokes you that you answer? |
I could also speak like you if you were in my place; I could heap up words against you and shake my head at you. | 4I also could speak like you, if you were in my place; I could pile up words against you and I could shake my head at you. |
But I would encourage you with my mouth, and the consolation of my lips would bring relief. | 5But I would strengthen you with my words; comfort from my lips would bring you relief. |
Even if I speak, my pain is not relieved, and if I hold back, how will it go away? | 6"But if I speak, my pain is not relieved, and if I refrain from speaking--how much of it goes away? |
Surely He has now exhausted me; You have devastated all my family. | 7Surely now he has worn me out, you have devastated my entire household. |
You have bound me, and it has become a witness; my frailty rises up and testifies against me. | 8You have seized me, and it has become a witness; my leanness has risen up against me and testifies against me. |
His anger has torn me and opposed me; He gnashes His teeth at me. My adversary pierces me with His eyes. | 9His anger has torn me and persecuted me; he has gnashed at me with his teeth; my adversary locks his eyes on me. |
They open their mouths against me and strike my cheeks with contempt; they join together against me. | 10People have opened their mouths against me, they have struck my cheek in scorn; they unite together against me. |
God has delivered me to unjust men; He has thrown me to the clutches of the wicked. | 11God abandons me to evil men, and throws me into the hands of wicked men. |
I was at ease, but He shattered me; He seized me by the neck and crushed me. He has set me up as His target; | 12I was in peace, and he has shattered me. He has seized me by the neck and crushed me. He has made me his target; |
His archers surround me. He pierces my kidneys without mercy and spills my gall on the ground. | 13his archers surround me. Without pity he pierces my kidneys and pours out my gall on the ground. |
He breaks me with wound upon wound; He rushes me like a mighty warrior. | 14He breaks through against me, time and time again; he rushes against me like a warrior. |
I have sewn sackcloth over my skin; I have buried my horn in the dust. | 15I have sewed sackcloth on my skin, and buried my horn in the dust; |
My face is red with weeping, and deep shadows ring my eyes; | 16my face is reddened because of weeping, and on my eyelids there is a deep darkness, |
yet my hands are free of violence and my prayer is pure. | 17although there is no violence in my hands and my prayer is pure. |
O earth, do not cover my blood; may my cry for help never be laid to rest. | 18"O earth, do not cover my blood, nor let there be a secret place for my cry. |
Even now my witness is in heaven, and my advocate is on high. | 19Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high. |
My friends are my scoffers as my eyes pour out tears to God. | 20My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; |
Oh, that a man might plead with God as he pleads with his neighbor! | 21and he contends with God on behalf of man as a man pleads for his friend. |
For when only a few years are past I will go the way of no return. | 22For the years that lie ahead are few, and then I will go on the way of no return. |
