For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. O God of my praise, be not silent.1For the music director, a psalm of David. O God whom I praise, do not ignore me!
For wicked and deceitful mouths open against me; they speak against me with lying tongues.2For they say cruel and deceptive things to me; they lie to me.
They surround me with hateful words and attack me without cause.3They surround me and say hateful things; they attack me for no reason.
In return for my love they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer.4They repay my love with accusations, but I continue to pray.
They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my love.5They repay me evil for good, and hate for love.
Set over him a wicked man; let an accuser stand at his right hand.6Appoint an evil man to testify against him! May an accuser stand at his right side!
When he is tried, let him be found guilty, and may his prayer be regarded as sin.7When he is judged, he will be found guilty! Then his prayer will be regarded as sinful.
May his days be few; may another take his position.8May his days be few! May another take his job!
May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow.9May his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow!
May his children wander as beggars, seeking sustenance far from their ruined homes.10May his children roam around begging, asking for handouts as they leave their ruined home!
May the creditor seize all he owns, and strangers plunder the fruits of his labor.11May the creditor seize all he owns! May strangers loot his property!
May there be no one to extend kindness to him, and no one to favor his fatherless children.12May no one show him kindness! May no one have compassion on his fatherless children!
May his descendants be cut off; may their name be blotted out from the next generation.13May his descendants be cut off! May the memory of them be wiped out by the time the next generation arrives!
May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, and the sin of his mother never be blotted out.14May his ancestors' sins be remembered by the LORD! May his mother's sin not be forgotten!
May their sins always remain before the LORD, that He may cut off their memory from the earth.15May the LORD be constantly aware of them, and cut off the memory of his children from the earth!
For he never thought to show kindness, but pursued the poor and needy and brokenhearted, even to their death.16For he never bothered to show kindness; he harassed the oppressed and needy, and killed the disheartened.
The cursing that he loved, may it fall on him; the blessing in which he refused to delight, may it be far from him.17He loved to curse others, so those curses have come upon him. He had no desire to bless anyone, so he has experienced no blessings.
The cursing that he wore like a coat, may it soak into his body like water, and into his bones like oil.18He made cursing a way of life, so curses poured into his stomach like water and seeped into his bones like oil.
May it be like a robe wrapped about him, like a belt tied forever around him.19May a curse attach itself to him, like a garment one puts on, or a belt one wears continually!
May this be the LORD’s reward to my accusers, to those who speak evil against me.20May the LORD repay my accusers in this way, those who say evil things about me!
But You, O GOD, the Lord, deal kindly with me for the sake of Your name; deliver me by the goodness of Your loving devotion.21O sovereign LORD, intervene on my behalf for the sake of your reputation! Because your loyal love is good, deliver me!
For I am poor and needy; my heart is wounded within me.22For I am oppressed and needy, and my heart beats violently within me.
I am fading away like a lengthening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust.23I am fading away like a shadow at the end of the day; I am shaken off like a locust.
My knees are weak from fasting, and my body grows lean and gaunt.24I am so starved my knees shake; I have turned into skin and bones.
I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads.25I am disdained by them. When they see me, they shake their heads.
Help me, O LORD my God; save me according to Your loving devotion.26Help me, O LORD my God! Because you are faithful to me, deliver me!
Let them know that this is Your hand, that You, O LORD, have done it.27Then they will realize this is your work, and that you, LORD, have accomplished it.
Though they curse, You will bless. When they rise up, they will be put to shame, but Your servant will rejoice.28They curse, but you will bless. When they attack, they will be humiliated, but your servant will rejoice.
May my accusers be clothed with disgrace; may they wear their shame like a robe.29My accusers will be covered with shame, and draped in humiliation as if it were a robe.
With my mouth I will thank the LORD profusely; I will praise Him in the presence of many.30I will thank the LORD profusely, in the middle of a crowd I will praise him,
For He stands at the right hand of the needy one, to save him from the condemners of his soul.31because he stands at the right hand of the needy, to deliver him from those who threaten his life.
