For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments. A Maskil of David. Listen to my prayer, O God, and do not ignore my plea. | 1For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments; a well-written song by David. Listen, O God, to my prayer! Do not ignore my appeal for mercy! |
Attend to me and answer me. I am restless in my complaint, and distraught | 2Pay attention to me and answer me! I am so upset and distressed, I am beside myself, |
at the voice of the enemy, at the pressure of the wicked. For they release disaster upon me and revile me in their anger. | 3because of what the enemy says, and because of how the wicked pressure me, for they hurl trouble down upon me and angrily attack me. |
My heart murmurs within me, and the terrors of death assail me. | 4My heart beats violently within me; the horrors of death overcome me. |
Fear and trembling grip me, and horror has overwhelmed me. | 5Fear and panic overpower me; terror overwhelms me. |
I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and find rest. | 6I say, "I wish I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and settle in a safe place! |
How far away I would flee! In the wilderness I would remain. Selah | 7Look, I will escape to a distant place; I will stay in the wilderness. (Selah) |
I would hurry to my shelter, far from this raging tempest.” | 8I will hurry off to a place that is safe from the strong wind and the gale." |
O Lord, confuse and confound their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city. | 9Confuse them, O Lord! Frustrate their plans! For I see violence and conflict in the city. |
Day and night they encircle the walls, while malice and trouble lie within. | 10Day and night they walk around on its walls, while wickedness and destruction are within it. |
Destruction is within; oppression and deceit never leave the streets. | 11Disaster is within it; violence and deceit do not depart from its public square. |
For it is not an enemy who insults me; that I could endure. It is not a foe who rises against me; from him I could hide. | 12Indeed, it is not an enemy who insults me, or else I could bear it; it is not one who hates me who arrogantly taunts me, or else I could hide from him. |
But it is you, a man like myself, my companion and close friend. | 13But it is you, a man like me, my close friend in whom I confided. |
We shared sweet fellowship together; we walked with the crowd into the house of God. | 14We would share personal thoughts with each other; in God's temple we would walk together among the crowd. |
Let death seize them by surprise; let them go down to Sheol alive, for evil is with them in their homes. | 15May death destroy them! May they go down alive into Sheol! For evil is in their dwelling place and in their midst. |
But I call to God, and the LORD saves me. | 16As for me, I will call out to God, and the LORD will deliver me. |
Morning, noon, and night, I cry out in distress, and He hears my voice. | 17During the evening, morning, and noontime I will lament and moan, and he will hear me. |
He redeems my soul in peace from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me. | 18He will rescue me and protect me from those who attack me, even though they greatly outnumber me. |
God will hear and humiliate them—the One enthroned for the ages—Selah because they do not change and they have no fear of God. | 19God, the one who has reigned as king from long ago, will hear and humiliate them. (Selah) They refuse to change, and do not fear God. |
My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant. | 20He attacks his friends; he breaks his solemn promises to them. |
His speech is smooth as butter, but war is in his heart. His words are softer than oil, yet they are swords unsheathed. | 21His words are as smooth as butter, but he harbors animosity in his heart. His words seem softer than oil, but they are really like sharp swords. |
Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken. | 22Throw your burden upon the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the godly to be upended. |
But You, O God, will bring them down to the Pit of destruction; men of bloodshed and deceit will not live out half their days. But I will trust in You. | 23But you, O God, will bring them down to the deep Pit. Violent and deceitful people will not live even half a normal lifespan. But as for me, I trust in you. |
