Berean Study BibleNew Living Translation
For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments. A Maskil of David. Listen to my prayer, O God, and do not ignore my plea.1Listen to my prayer, O God. Do not ignore my cry for help!
Attend to me and answer me. I am restless in my complaint, and distraught2Please listen and answer me, for I am overwhelmed by my troubles.
at the voice of the enemy, at the pressure of the wicked. For they release disaster upon me and revile me in their anger.3My enemies shout at me, making loud and wicked threats. They bring trouble on me and angrily hunt me down.
My heart murmurs within me, and the terrors of death assail me.4My heart pounds in my chest. The terror of death assaults me.
Fear and trembling grip me, and horror has overwhelmed me.5Fear and trembling overwhelm me, and I can’t stop shaking.
I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and find rest.6Oh, that I had wings like a dove; then I would fly away and rest!
How far away I would flee! In the wilderness I would remain. Selah7I would fly far away to the quiet of the wilderness. Interlude
I would hurry to my shelter, far from this raging tempest.”8How quickly I would escape— far from this wild storm of hatred.
O Lord, confuse and confound their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city.9Confuse them, Lord, and frustrate their plans, for I see violence and conflict in the city.
Day and night they encircle the walls, while malice and trouble lie within.10Its walls are patrolled day and night against invaders, but the real danger is wickedness within the city.
Destruction is within; oppression and deceit never leave the streets.11Everything is falling apart; threats and cheating are rampant in the streets.
For it is not an enemy who insults me; that I could endure. It is not a foe who rises against me; from him I could hide.12It is not an enemy who taunts me— I could bear that. It is not my foes who so arrogantly insult me— I could have hidden from them.
But it is you, a man like myself, my companion and close friend.13Instead, it is you—my equal, my companion and close friend.
We shared sweet fellowship together; we walked with the crowd into the house of God.14What good fellowship we once enjoyed as we walked together to the house of God.
Let death seize them by surprise; let them go down to Sheol alive, for evil is with them in their homes.15Let death stalk my enemies; let the grave swallow them alive, for evil makes its home within them.
But I call to God, and the LORD saves me.16But I will call on God, and the LORD will rescue me.
Morning, noon, and night, I cry out in distress, and He hears my voice.17Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the LORD hears my voice.
He redeems my soul in peace from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me.18He ransoms me and keeps me safe from the battle waged against me, though many still oppose me.
God will hear and humiliate them—the One enthroned for the ages—Selah because they do not change and they have no fear of God.19God, who has ruled forever, will hear me and humble them. Interlude For my enemies refuse to change their ways; they do not fear God.
My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant.20As for my companion, he betrayed his friends; he broke his promises.
His speech is smooth as butter, but war is in his heart. His words are softer than oil, yet they are swords unsheathed.21His words are as smooth as butter, but in his heart is war. His words are as soothing as lotion, but underneath are daggers!
Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.22Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.
But You, O God, will bring them down to the Pit of destruction; men of bloodshed and deceit will not live out half their days. But I will trust in You.23But you, O God, will send the wicked down to the pit of destruction. Murderers and liars will die young, but I am trusting you to save me.
