| 17If anyone wants to do his will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own. | 17If anyone wants to do God's will, he will know about my teaching, whether it is from God or whether I speak from my own authority. |
| 18The one who speaks on his own seeks his own glory; but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him. | 18The person who speaks on his own authority desires to receive honor for himself; the one who desires the honor of the one who sent him is a man of integrity, and there is no unrighteousness in him. |
| 19Didn't Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?" | 19Hasn't Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law! Why do you want to kill me?" |
| 20"You have a demon!" the crowd responded. "Who is trying to kill you?" | 20The crowd answered, "You're possessed by a demon! Who is trying to kill you?" |
| 21"I performed one work, and you are all amazed," Jesus answered. | 21Jesus replied, "I performed one miracle and you are all amazed. |
| 22"This is why Moses has given you circumcision--not that it comes from Moses but from the fathers--and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. | 22However, because Moses gave you the practice of circumcision (not that it came from Moses, but from the forefathers), you circumcise a male child on the Sabbath. |
| 23If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses won't be broken, are you angry at me because I made a man entirely well on the Sabbath? | 23But if a male child is circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses is not broken, why are you angry with me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? |
| 24Stop judging according to outward appearances; rather judge according to righteous judgment." | 24Do not judge according to external appearance, but judge with proper judgment." |
| 25Some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill? | 25Then some of the residents of Jerusalem began to say, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill? |
| 26Yet, look, he's speaking publicly and they're saying nothing to him. Can it be true that the authorities know he is the Messiah? | 26Yet here he is, speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to him. Do the rulers really know that this man is the Christ? |
| 27But we know where this man is from. When the Messiah comes, nobody will know where he is from." | 27But we know where this man comes from. Whenever the Christ comes, no one will know where he comes from." |
| 28As he was teaching in the temple, Jesus cried out, "You know me and you know where I am from. Yet I have not come on my own, but the one who sent me is true. You don't know him; | 28Then Jesus, while teaching in the temple courts, cried out, "You both know me and know where I come from! And I have not come on my own initiative, but the one who sent me is true. You do not know him, |
| 29I know him because I am from him, and he sent me." | 29but I know him, because I have come from him and he sent me." |

| 52"You aren't from Galilee too, are you?" they replied. "Investigate and you will see that no prophet arises from Galilee." | 52They replied, "You aren't from Galilee too, are you? Investigate carefully and you will see that no prophet comes from Galilee!" |
