The LORD came to Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what he had promised.1The LORD kept his word and did for Sarah exactly what he had promised.
Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time God had told him.2She became pregnant, and she gave birth to a son for Abraham in his old age. This happened at just the time God had said it would.
Abraham named his son who was born to him--the one Sarah bore to him--Isaac.3And Abraham named their son Isaac.
When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God had commanded him.4Eight days after Isaac was born, Abraham circumcised him as God had commanded.
Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.5Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born.
Sarah said, "God has made me laugh, and everyone who hears will laugh with me."6And Sarah declared, “God has brought me laughter. All who hear about this will laugh with me.
She also said, "Who would have told Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne a son for him in his old age."7Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse a baby? Yet I have given Abraham a son in his old age!” Hagar and Ishmael Are Sent Away
The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham held a great feast on the day Isaac was weaned.8When Isaac grew up and was about to be weaned, Abraham prepared a huge feast to celebrate the occasion.
But Sarah saw the son mocking--the one Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham.9But Sarah saw Ishmael—the son of Abraham and her Egyptian servant Hagar—making fun of her son, Isaac.
So she said to Abraham, "Drive out this slave with her son, for the son of this slave will not be a coheir with my son Isaac!"10So she turned to Abraham and demanded, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son. He is not going to share the inheritance with my son, Isaac. I won’t have it!”
This was very distressing to Abraham because of his son.11This upset Abraham very much because Ishmael was his son.
But God said to Abraham, "Do not be distressed about the boy and about your slave. Whatever Sarah says to you, listen to her, because your offspring will be traced through Isaac,12But God told Abraham, “Do not be upset over the boy and your servant. Do whatever Sarah tells you, for Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted.
and I will also make a nation of the slave's son because he is your offspring."13But I will also make a nation of the descendants of Hagar’s son because he is your son, too.”
Early in the morning Abraham got up, took bread and a waterskin, put them on Hagar's shoulders, and sent her and the boy away. She left and wandered in the Wilderness of Beer-sheba.14So Abraham got up early the next morning, prepared food and a container of water, and strapped them on Hagar’s shoulders. Then he sent her away with their son, and she wandered aimlessly in the wilderness of Beersheba.
When the water in the skin was gone, she left the boy under one of the bushes15When the water was gone, she put the boy in the shade of a bush.
and went and sat at a distance, about a bowshot away, for she said, "I can't bear to watch the boy die!" While she sat at a distance, she wept loudly.16Then she went and sat down by herself about a hundred yards away. “I don’t want to watch the boy die,” she said, as she burst into tears.
God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, "What's wrong, Hagar? Don't be afraid, for God has heard the boy crying from the place where he is.17But God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, “Hagar, what’s wrong? Do not be afraid! God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.
Get up, help the boy up, and grasp his hand, for I will make him a great nation."18Go to him and comfort him, for I will make a great nation from his descendants.”
Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well. So she went and filled the waterskin and gave the boy a drink.19Then God opened Hagar’s eyes, and she saw a well full of water. She quickly filled her water container and gave the boy a drink.
God was with the boy, and he grew; he settled in the wilderness and became an archer.20And God was with the boy as he grew up in the wilderness. He became a skillful archer,
He settled in the Wilderness of Paran, and his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt.21and he settled in the wilderness of Paran. His mother arranged for him to marry a woman from the land of Egypt. Abraham’s Covenant with Abimelech
At that time Abimelech, accompanied by Phicol the commander of his army, said to Abraham, "God is with you in everything you do.22About this time, Abimelech came with Phicol, his army commander, to visit Abraham. “God is obviously with you, helping you in everything you do,” Abimelech said.
Swear to me by God here and now, that you will not break an agreement with me or with my children and descendants. As I have been loyal to you, so you will be loyal to me and to the country where you are a resident alien."23“Swear to me in God’s name that you will never deceive me, my children, or any of my descendants. I have been loyal to you, so now swear that you will be loyal to me and to this country where you are living as a foreigner.”
And Abraham said, "I swear it."24Abraham replied, “Yes, I swear to it!”
But Abraham complained to Abimelech because of the well that Abimelech's servants had seized.25Then Abraham complained to Abimelech about a well that Abimelech’s servants had taken by force from Abraham’s servants.
Abimelech replied, "I don't know who did this thing. You didn't report anything to me, so I hadn't heard about it until today."26“This is the first I’ve heard of it,” Abimelech answered. “I have no idea who is responsible. You have never complained about this before.”
Abraham took flocks and herds and gave them to Abimelech, and the two of them made a covenant.27Abraham then gave some of his sheep, goats, and cattle to Abimelech, and they made a treaty.
Abraham separated seven ewe lambs from the flock.28But Abraham also took seven additional female lambs and set them off by themselves.
And Abimelech said to Abraham, "Why have you separated these seven ewe lambs?"29Abimelech asked, “Why have you set these seven apart from the others?”
He replied, "You are to accept the seven ewe lambs from me so that this act will serve as my witness that I dug this well."30Abraham replied, “Please accept these seven lambs to show your agreement that I dug this well.”
Therefore that place was called Beer-sheba because it was there that the two of them swore an oath.31Then he named the place Beersheba (which means “well of the oath”), because that was where they had sworn the oath.
After they had made a covenant at Beer-sheba, Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, left and returned to the land of the Philistines.32After making their covenant at Beersheba, Abimelech left with Phicol, the commander of his army, and they returned home to the land of the Philistines.
Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beer-sheba, and there he called on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God.33Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba, and there he worshiped the LORD, the Eternal God.
And Abraham lived as an alien in the land of the Philistines for many days.34And Abraham lived as a foreigner in Philistine country for a long time.
