Holman Christian Standard Bible | New Living Translation |
For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. God, we have heard with our ears-- our ancestors have told us-- the work You accomplished in their days, in days long ago: | 1O God, we have heard it with our own ears— our ancestors have told us of all you did in their day, in days long ago: |
to plant them, You drove out the nations with Your hand; to settle them, You crushed the peoples. | 2You drove out the pagan nations by your power and gave all the land to our ancestors. You crushed their enemies and set our ancestors free. |
For they did not take the land by their sword-- their arm did not bring them victory-- but by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, for You were pleased with them. | 3They did not conquer the land with their swords; it was not their own strong arm that gave them victory. It was your right hand and strong arm and the blinding light from your face that helped them, for you loved them. |
You are my King, my God, who ordains victories for Jacob. | 4You are my King and my God. You command victories for Israel. |
Through You we drive back our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies. | 5Only by your power can we push back our enemies; only in your name can we trample our foes. |
For I do not trust in my bow, and my sword does not bring me victory. | 6I do not trust in my bow; I do not count on my sword to save me. |
But You give us victory over our foes and let those who hate us be disgraced. | 7You are the one who gives us victory over our enemies; you disgrace those who hate us. |
We boast in God all day long; we will praise Your name forever. Selah | 8O God, we give glory to you all day long and constantly praise your name. Interlude |
But You have rejected and humiliated us; You do not march out with our armies. | 9But now you have tossed us aside in dishonor. You no longer lead our armies to battle. |
You make us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have taken plunder for themselves. | 10You make us retreat from our enemies and allow those who hate us to plunder our land. |
You hand us over to be eaten like sheep and scatter us among the nations. | 11You have butchered us like sheep and scattered us among the nations. |
You sell Your people for nothing; You make no profit from selling them. | 12You sold your precious people for a pittance, making nothing on the sale. |
You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors, a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us. | 13You let our neighbors mock us. We are an object of scorn and derision to those around us. |
You make us a joke among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. | 14You have made us the butt of their jokes; they shake their heads at us in scorn. |
My disgrace is before me all day long, and shame has covered my face, | 15We can’t escape the constant humiliation; shame is written across our faces. |
because of the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy and avenger. | 16All we hear are the taunts of our mockers. All we see are our vengeful enemies. |
All this has happened to us, but we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant. | 17All this has happened though we have not forgotten you. We have not violated your covenant. |
Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path. | 18Our hearts have not deserted you. We have not strayed from your path. |
But You have crushed us in a haunt of jackals and have covered us with deepest darkness. | 19Yet you have crushed us in the jackal’s desert home. You have covered us with darkness and death. |
If we had forgotten the name of our God and spread out our hands to a foreign god, | 20If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread our hands in prayer to foreign gods, |
wouldn't God have found this out, since He knows the secrets of the heart? | 21God would surely have known it, for he knows the secrets of every heart. |
Because of You we are slain all day long; we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered. | 22But for your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep. |
Wake up, LORD! Why are You sleeping? Get up! Don't reject us forever! | 23Wake up, O Lord! Why do you sleep? Get up! Do not reject us forever. |
Why do You hide Yourself and forget our affliction and oppression? | 24Why do you look the other way? Why do you ignore our suffering and oppression? |
For we have sunk down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. | 25We collapse in the dust, lying face down in the dirt. |
Rise up! Help us! Redeem us because of Your faithful love. | 26Rise up! Help us! Ransom us because of your unfailing love. |
