| 1But now this is what the LORD says, the one who created you, Jacob, the one who formed you, Israel: "Do not be afraid, because I've redeemed you. I've called you by name; you are mine. | 1Now this is what the LORD says-- the One who created you, Jacob, and the One who formed you, Israel--" Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine. |
| 2When you pass through the waters, I'll be with you; and through the rivers, they won't sweep over you. when you walk through fire you won't be scorched, and the flame won't set you ablaze. | 2I will be with you when you pass through the waters, and when you pass through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. You will not be scorched when you walk through the fire, and the flame will not burn you. |
| 3"I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Redeemer. And I've given Egypt as your ransom, Cush and the people of Seba in exchange for you. | 3For I Yahweh your God, the Holy One of Israel, and your Savior, give Egypt as a ransom for you, Cush and Seba in your place. |
| 4Since you're precious in my sight and honored, and because I love you, I'm giving up people in your place, and nations in exchange for your life." | 4Because you are precious in My sight and honored, and I love you, I will give people in exchange for you and nations instead of your life. |
| 5"Don't be afraid, for I am with you; I'll bring your children from the east, and gather you from the west. | 5Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your descendants from the east, and gather you from the west. |
| 6I'll say to the north, 'Give them up'! and to the south, 'Don't keep them back!' Bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the ends of the earth— | 6I will say to the north: Give them up! and to the south: Do not hold them back! Bring My sons from far away, and My daughters from the ends of the earth-- |
| 7everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. | 7everyone called by My name and created for My glory. I have formed him; indeed, I have made him." |
| 8"Bring out the people who are blind, yet still have eyes, who are deaf, yet still have ears! | 8Bring out a people who are blind, yet have eyes, and are deaf, yet have ears. |
| 9Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the peoples be assembled. "Who is there among them who can declare this, or announce the former things? Let them produce their witnesses to prove them right, and let them proclaim so people will say, 'It's true.' | 9All the nations are gathered together, and the peoples are assembled. Who among them can declare this, and tell us the former things? Let them present their witnesses to vindicate themselves, so that people may hear and say, "It is true."" |
| 10"You are my witnesses," declares the LORD, "and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and trust me and understand that I am the One. Before me no God was formed, nor will there be one after me. | 10You are My witnesses"-- this is the LORD's declaration--" and My servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe Me and understand that I am He. No god was formed before Me, and there will be none after Me. |
| 11I, yes I, am the LORD, and apart from me there is no savior. | 11I, I am Yahweh, and there is no other Savior but Me. |
| 12I've revealed and saved and proclaimed, when there was no foreign god among you — and you are my witnesses," declares the LORD. | 12I alone declared, saved, and proclaimed-- and not some foreign god among you. So you are My witnesses"-- this is the LORD's declaration--" and I am God. |
| 13"I am God; also from ancient days I am the one. And there is no one who can deliver out of my hand; when I act, who can reverse it?" | 13Also, from today on I am He alone, and none can deliver from My hand. I act, and who can reverse it?" |
| 14This is what the LORD says, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: "For your sake I will send to Babylon, and bring them all down as fugitives. Now as for the Babylonians, their ringing cry will become lamentation. | 14This is what the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel says: Because of you, I will send to Babylon and bring all of them as fugitives, even the Chaldeans in the ships in which they rejoice. |
| 15I am the LORD, your Holy One, Creator of Israel, and your King." | 15I am Yahweh, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King. |
| 16This is what the LORD says — who makes a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters, | 16This is what the LORD says-- who makes a way in the sea, and a path through surging waters, |
| 17who brings out chariots and horsemen, and armies and warriors at the same time. They lay there, never to rise again, extinguished, snuffed out like a candle: | 17who brings out the chariot and horse, the army and the mighty one together (they lie down, they do not rise again; they are extinguished, quenched like a wick)--" |
| 18"Don't remember the former things; don't dwell on things past. | 18Do not remember the past events, pay no attention to things of old. |
| 19Watch! I'm about to carry out something new! And now it's springing up— don't you recognize it? I'm making a way in the wilderness and paths in the desert. | 19Look, I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it? Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness, rivers in the desert. |
| 20Wild animals, jackals, and owls will honor me because I provide water in the desert and streams in the wilderness to give drink to my people, my chosen ones, | 20The animals of the field will honor Me, jackals and ostriches, because I provide water in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give drink to My chosen people. |
| 21the people whom I formed for myself and so that they may speak my praise." | 21The people I formed for Myself will declare My praise." |
| 22 "And yet you didn't call upon me, Jacob; indeed, you are tired of me, Israel! | 22But Jacob, you have not called on Me, because, Israel, you have become weary of Me. |
| 23You haven't brought me your sheep for a burnt-offering, nor have you honored me with your sacrifices, nor have you made meal offerings for me — yet I have not tired you about incense! | 23You have not brought Me your sheep for burnt offerings or honored Me with your sacrifices. I have not burdened you with offerings or wearied you with incense. |
| 24You haven't bought me sweet cane with money, nor have you satisfied me with the fat of your sacrifices. You have only burdened me with your sins and made me tired with your iniquities. | 24You have not bought Me aromatic cane with silver, or satisfied Me with the fat of your sacrifices. But you have burdened Me with your sins; you have wearied Me with your iniquities." |
| 25"I, I am the one who blots out your transgression for my own sake, and I'll remember your sins no more. | 25It is I who sweep away your transgressions for My own sake and remember your sins no more. |
| 26Recount the brief! Let's argue the matter together; Present your case, so that you may be proved right. | 26Take Me to court; let us argue our case together. State your case, so that you may be vindicated. |
| 27Your first ancestor sinned, and your mediators rebelled against me. | 27Your first father sinned, and your mediators have rebelled against Me. |
| 28So I'll disgrace the leaders of the Temple, and I'll consign Jacob to total destruction and Israel to contempt. | 28So I defiled the officers of the sanctuary, and set Jacob apart for destruction and Israel for abuse." |
