As Jesus left the Temple and was walking away, his disciples came up to him to point out to him the Temple buildings. 1Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings.
But he told them, "You see all these things, don't you? I tell all of you with certainty, there isn't a single stone here that will be left standing on top of another. They will all be torn down."2"Do you see all these things?" he asked. "Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."
While Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately and said, "Tell us, when will these things take place, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"3As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"
Jesus answered them, "See to it that no one deceives you, 4Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you.
because many will come in my name and say, 'I'm the Messiah,' and they will deceive many people. 5For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Messiah,' and will deceive many.
You'll hear of wars and rumors of wars. See to it that you aren't alarmed. These things must take place, but the end hasn't come yet, 6You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.
because nation will rise up in arms against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 7Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.
But all these things are only the beginning of the birth pains."8All these are the beginning of birth pains.
"Then they'll hand you over to suffer and will kill you, and you'll be hated by all the nations because of my name. 9"Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.
Then many people will fall away, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 10At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other,
Many false prophets will appear and deceive many people, 11and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.
and because lawlessness will increase, the love of many people will grow cold. 12Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,
But the person who endures to the end will be saved. 13but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.
And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come."14And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
"So when you see the destructive desecration, mentioned by the prophet Daniel, standing in the Holy Place (let the reader take note),15"So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel--let the reader understand--
then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. 16then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
Anyone who's on the housetop must not come down to get what is in his house, 17Let no one on the housetop go down to take anything out of the house.
and anyone who's in the field must not turn back to get his coat.18Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak.
"How terrible it will be for women who are pregnant or who are nursing babies in those days! 19How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!
Pray that it may not be in winter or on a Sabbath when you flee, 20Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath.
because at that time there will be great suffering, the kind that hasn't happened from the beginning of the world until now and certainly won't ever happen again. 21For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now--and never to be equaled again.
If those days hadn't been limited, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, those days will be limited.22"If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.
"At that time, if anyone says to you, 'Look! Here's the Messiah!' or 'There he is!', don't believe it, 23At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Messiah!' or, 'There he is!' do not believe it.
because false messiahs and false prophets will appear and display great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 24For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.
Remember, I've told you this beforehand. 25See, I have told you ahead of time.
So if they say to you, 'Look! He's in the wilderness,' don't go out looking for him. And if they say, 'Look! He's in the storeroom,' don't believe it, 26"So if anyone tells you, 'There he is, out in the wilderness,' do not go out; or, 'Here he is, in the inner rooms,' do not believe it.
because just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 27For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
Wherever there's a corpse, there the vultures will gather.28Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.
"Immediately after the troubles of those days, 'The sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of heaven will be shaken loose.' 29"Immediately after the distress of those days "'the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.'
Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all 'the tribes of the land will mourn' when they see 'the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven' with power and great glory. 30"Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.
He'll send out his angels with a loud trumpet blast, and they'll gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to another."31And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
"Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches become tender and it produces leaves, you know that summer is near. 32"Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.
In the same way, when you see all these things, you'll know that the Son of Man is near, right at the door. 33Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door.
I tell all of you with certainty, this generation won't disappear until these things happen. 34Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.
Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear."35Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
"No one knows when that day or hour will come —not the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father, 36"But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
because just as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be when the Son of Man comes. 37As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.
In those days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage right up to the day when Noah went into the ark. 38For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark;
They were unaware of what was happening until the flood came and swept all of them away. That's how it will be when the Son of Man comes. 39and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.
At that time, two people will be in the field. One will be taken, and one will be left behind. 40Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.
Two women will be grinding grain at the mill. One will be taken, and one will be left behind.41Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
"So keep on watching, because you don't know on what day your Lord is coming. 42"Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.
But be sure of this: if the owner of the house had known when during the night the thief would be coming, he would have stayed awake and not allowed his house to be broken into. 43But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into.
So you, too, must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour you are not expecting him."44So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
"Who, then, is the faithful and wise servant whom his master has put in charge of his household to give the others their food at the right time? 45"Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time?
How blessed is that servant whom his master finds doing this when he comes! 46It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.
I tell all of you with certainty, he will put him in charge of all his property.47Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
"But if that wicked servant says to himself, 'My master has been delayed,' 48But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, 'My master is staying away a long time,'
and begins to beat his fellow servants and eat and drink with the drunks, 49and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.
that servant's master will come on a day when he doesn't expect him and at an hour that he doesn't know. 50The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of.
Then his master will punish him severely and assign him a place with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." 51He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
