| 3The person who eats any kind of food must not ridicule the person who does not eat them, and the person who does not eat certain foods must not criticize the person who eats them, for God has accepted him. | 3The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them. |
| 4Who are you to criticize someone else's servant? He stands or falls before his own Lord—and stand he will, because the Lord makes him stand. | 4Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand. |
| 5One person decides in favor of one day over another, while another person decides that all days are the same. Let each one be fully convinced in his own mind: | 5One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. |
| 6The one who observes a special day, observes it to honor the Lord. The one who eats, eats to honor the Lord, since he gives thanks to God. | 14I know—and have been persuaded by the Lord Jesus—that nothing is unclean in and of itself, but it is unclean to a person who thinks it is unclean. | 14I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean. |
| 15For if your brother is being hurt by what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not destroy the person for whom the Messiah died by what you eat. | 15If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died. |
| 16Do not allow what seems good to you to be spoken of as evil. | 16Therefore do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil. |
| 17For God's kingdom does not consist of food and drink, but of righteousness, peace, and joy produced by the Holy Spirit. | 17For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, |
| 18For the person who serves the Messiah in this way is pleasing to God and approved by people. | 18because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval. |
| 19Therefore, let's keep on pursuing those things that bring peace and that lead to building up one another. | 19Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. |
| 20Do not destroy God's action for the sake of food. Everything is clean, but it is wrong to make another person stumble because of what you eat. | 20Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. |
| 21The right thing to do is to avoid eating meat, drinking wine, or doing anything else that makes your brother stumble, upset, or weak. | 21It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall. |
| 22As for the faith you do have, have it as your own conviction before God. How blessed is the person who has no reason to condemn himself because of what he approves! | 22So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves. |
| 23But the person who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not act in faith; and anything that is not done in faith is sin. | 23But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin. |
