To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. Hold not thy peace, O God of my praise; | 1God of my praise, do not be silent. |
For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against me: they have spoken against me with a lying tongue. | 2For wicked and deceitful mouths open against me; they speak against me with lying tongues. |
They compassed me about also with words of hatred; and fought against me without a cause. | 3They surround me with hateful words and attack me without cause. |
For my love they are my adversaries: but I give myself unto prayer. | 4In return for my love they accuse me, but I continue to pray. |
And they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love. | 5They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my love. |
Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand. | 6Set a wicked person over him; let an accuser stand at his right hand. |
When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin. | 7When he is judged, let him be found guilty, and let his prayer be counted as sin. |
Let his days be few; and let another take his office. | 8Let his days be few; let another take over his position. |
Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. | 9Let his children be fatherless and his wife a widow. |
Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places. | 10Let his children wander as beggars, searching for food far from their demolished homes. |
Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour. | 11Let a creditor seize all he has; let strangers plunder what he has worked for. |
Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children. | 12Let no one show him kindness, and let no one be gracious to his fatherless children. |
Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out. | 13Let the line of his descendants be cut off; let their name be blotted out in the next generation. |
Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. | 14Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, and do not let his mother's sin be blotted out. |
Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth. | 15Let their sins always remain before the LORD, and let him remove all memory of them from the earth. |
Because that he remembered not to shew mercy, but persecuted the poor and needy man, that he might even slay the broken in heart. | 16For he did not think to show kindness, but pursued the suffering, needy, and brokenhearted in order to put them to death. |
As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him. | 17He loved cursing--let it fall on him; he took no delight in blessing--let it be far from him. |
As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones. | 18He wore cursing like his coat--let it enter his body like water and go into his bones like oil. |
Let it be unto him as the garment which covereth him, and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually. | 19Let it be like a robe he wraps around himself, like a belt he always wears. |
Let this be the reward of mine adversaries from the LORD, and of them that speak evil against my soul. | 20Let this be the LORD's payment to my accusers, to those who speak evil against me. |
But do thou for me, O GOD the Lord, for thy name's sake: because thy mercy is good, deliver thou me. | 21But you, LORD, my Lord, deal kindly with me for your name's sake; because your faithful love is good, rescue me. |
For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. | 22For I am suffering and needy; my heart is wounded within me. |
I am gone like the shadow when it declineth: I am tossed up and down as the locust. | 23I fade away like a lengthening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust. |
My knees are weak through fasting; and my flesh faileth of fatness. | 24My knees are weak from fasting, and my body is emaciated. |
I became also a reproach unto them: when they looked upon me they shaked their heads. | 25I have become an object of ridicule to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads in scorn. |
Help me, O LORD my God: O save me according to thy mercy: | 26Help me, LORD my God; save me according to your faithful love |
That they may know that this is thy hand; that thou, LORD, hast done it. | 27so they may know that this is your hand and that you, LORD, have done it. |
Let them curse, but bless thou: when they arise, let them be ashamed; but let thy servant rejoice. | 28Though they curse, you will bless. When they rise up, they will be put to shame, but your servant will rejoice. |
Let mine adversaries be clothed with shame, and let them cover themselves with their own confusion, as with a mantle. | 29My accusers will be clothed with disgrace; they will wear their shame like a cloak. |
I will greatly praise the LORD with my mouth; yea, I will praise him among the multitude. | 30I will fervently thank the LORD with my mouth; I will praise him in the presence of many. |
For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul. | 31For he stands at the right hand of the needy to save him from those who would condemn him. |
