King James Bible | English Standard Version |
To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. Hold not thy peace, O God of my praise; | 1Be not silent, O God of my praise! |
For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against me: they have spoken against me with a lying tongue. | 2For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me, speaking against me with lying tongues. |
They compassed me about also with words of hatred; and fought against me without a cause. | 3They encircle me with words of hate, and attack me without cause. |
For my love they are my adversaries: but I give myself unto prayer. | 4In return for my love they accuse me, but I give myself to prayer. |
And they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love. | 5So they reward me evil for good, and hatred for my love. |
Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand. | 6Appoint a wicked man against him; let an accuser stand at his right hand. |
When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin. | 7When he is tried, let him come forth guilty; let his prayer be counted as sin! |
Let his days be few; and let another take his office. | 8May his days be few; may another take his office! |
Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. | 9May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow! |
Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places. | 10May his children wander about and beg, seeking food far from the ruins they inhabit! |
Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour. | 11May the creditor seize all that he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his toil! |
Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children. | 12Let there be none to extend kindness to him, nor any to pity his fatherless children! |
Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out. | 13May his posterity be cut off; may his name be blotted out in the second generation! |
Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. | 14May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out! |
Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth. | 15Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth! |
Because that he remembered not to shew mercy, but persecuted the poor and needy man, that he might even slay the broken in heart. | 16For he did not remember to show kindness, but pursued the poor and needy and the brokenhearted, to put them to death. |
As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him. | 17He loved to curse; let curses come upon him! He did not delight in blessing; may it be far from him! |
As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones. | 18He clothed himself with cursing as his coat; may it soak into his body like water, like oil into his bones! |
Let it be unto him as the garment which covereth him, and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually. | 19May it be like a garment that he wraps around him, like a belt that he puts on every day! |
Let this be the reward of mine adversaries from the LORD, and of them that speak evil against my soul. | 20May this be the reward of my accusers from the LORD, of those who speak evil against my life! |
But do thou for me, O GOD the Lord, for thy name's sake: because thy mercy is good, deliver thou me. | 21But you, O GOD my Lord, deal on my behalf for your name’s sake; because your steadfast love is good, deliver me! |
For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. | 22For I am poor and needy, and my heart is stricken within me. |
I am gone like the shadow when it declineth: I am tossed up and down as the locust. | 23I am gone like a shadow at evening; I am shaken off like a locust. |
My knees are weak through fasting; and my flesh faileth of fatness. | 24My knees are weak through fasting; my body has become gaunt, with no fat. |
I became also a reproach unto them: when they looked upon me they shaked their heads. | 25I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they wag their heads. |
Help me, O LORD my God: O save me according to thy mercy: | 26Help me, O LORD my God! Save me according to your steadfast love! |
That they may know that this is thy hand; that thou, LORD, hast done it. | 27Let them know that this is your hand; you, O LORD, have done it! |
Let them curse, but bless thou: when they arise, let them be ashamed; but let thy servant rejoice. | 28Let them curse, but you will bless! They arise and are put to shame, but your servant will be glad! |
Let mine adversaries be clothed with shame, and let them cover themselves with their own confusion, as with a mantle. | 29May my accusers be clothed with dishonor; may they be wrapped in their own shame as in a cloak! |
I will greatly praise the LORD with my mouth; yea, I will praise him among the multitude. | 30With my mouth I will give great thanks to the LORD; I will praise him in the midst of the throng. |
For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul. | 31For he stands at the right hand of the needy one, to save him from those who condemn his soul to death. |
