King James Bible | English Standard Version |
Then Job answered and said, | 1Then Job answered and said: |
I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all. | 2“I have heard many such things; miserable comforters are you all. |
Shall vain words have an end? or what emboldeneth thee that thou answerest? | 3Shall windy words have an end? Or what provokes you that you answer? |
I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head at you. | 4I also could speak as you do, if you were in my place; I could join words together against you and shake my head at you. |
But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should asswage your grief. | 5I could strengthen you with my mouth, and the solace of my lips would assuage your pain. |
Though I speak, my grief is not asswaged: and though I forbear, what am I eased? | 6“If I speak, my pain is not assuaged, and if I forbear, how much of it leaves me? |
But now he hath made me weary: thou hast made desolate all my company. | 7Surely now God has worn me out; he has made desolate all my company. |
And thou hast filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness against me: and my leanness rising up in me beareth witness to my face. | 8And he has shriveled me up, which is a witness against me, and my leanness has risen up against me; it testifies to my face. |
He teareth me in his wrath, who hateth me: he gnasheth upon me with his teeth; mine enemy sharpeneth his eyes upon me. | 9He has torn me in his wrath and hated me; he has gnashed his teeth at me; my adversary sharpens his eyes against me. |
They have gaped upon me with their mouth; they have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully; they have gathered themselves together against me. | 10Men have gaped at me with their mouth; they have struck me insolently on the cheek; they mass themselves together against me. |
God hath delivered me to the ungodly, and turned me over into the hands of the wicked. | 11God gives me up to the ungodly and casts me into the hands of the wicked. |
I was at ease, but he hath broken me asunder: he hath also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark. | 12I was at ease, and he broke me apart; he seized me by the neck and dashed me to pieces; he set me up as his target; |
His archers compass me round about, he cleaveth my reins asunder, and doth not spare; he poureth out my gall upon the ground. | 13his archers surround me. He slashes open my kidneys and does not spare; he pours out my gall on the ground. |
He breaketh me with breach upon breach, he runneth upon me like a giant. | 14He breaks me with breach upon breach; he runs upon me like a warrior. |
I have sewed sackcloth upon my skin, and defiled my horn in the dust. | 15I have sewed sackcloth upon my skin and have laid my strength in the dust. |
My face is foul with weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death; | 16My face is red with weeping, and on my eyelids is deep darkness, |
Not for any injustice in mine hands: also my prayer is pure. | 17although there is no violence in my hands, and my prayer is pure. |
O earth, cover not thou my blood, and let my cry have no place. | 18“O earth, cover not my blood, and let my cry find no resting place. |
Also now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my record is on high. | 19Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and he who testifies for me is on high. |
My friends scorn me: but mine eye poureth out tears unto God. | 20My friends scorn me; my eye pours out tears to God, |
O that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleadeth for his neighbour! | 21that he would argue the case of a man with God, as a son of man does with his neighbor. |
When a few years are come, then I shall go the way whence I shall not return. | 22For when a few years have come I shall go the way from which I shall not return. |
