King James Bible | New Living Translation |
Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem. | 1One day some Pharisees and teachers of religious law arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus. |
And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault. | 2They noticed that some of his disciples failed to follow the Jewish ritual of hand washing before eating. |
For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. | 3(The Jews, especially the Pharisees, do not eat until they have poured water over their cupped hands, as required by their ancient traditions. |
And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables. | 4Similarly, they don’t eat anything from the market until they immerse their hands in water. This is but one of many traditions they have clung to—such as their ceremonial washing of cups, pitchers, and kettles. ) |
Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? | 5So the Pharisees and teachers of religious law asked him, “Why don’t your disciples follow our age-old tradition? They eat without first performing the hand-washing ceremony.” |
He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. | 6Jesus replied, “You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. |
Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. | 7 Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’ |
For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. | 8 For you ignore God’s law and substitute your own tradition.” |
And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. | 9Then he said, “You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition. |
For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: | 10 For instance, Moses gave you this law from God: ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’ |
But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. | 11 But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’ |
And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; | 12 In this way, you let them disregard their needy parents. |
Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye. | 13 And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition. And this is only one example among many others.” |
And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand: | 14Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “All of you listen,” he said, “and try to understand. |
There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. | 15 It’s not what goes into your body that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes from your heart. ” |
If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. | 16 |
And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable. | 17Then Jesus went into a house to get away from the crowd, and his disciples asked him what he meant by the parable he had just used. |
And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him; | 18 “Don’t you understand either?” he asked. “Can’t you see that the food you put into your body cannot defile you? |
Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? | 19 Food doesn’t go into your heart, but only passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.” (By saying this, he declared that every kind of food is acceptable in God’s eyes.) |
And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. | 20And then he added, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you. |
For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, | 21 For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, |
Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: | 22 adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. |
All these evil things come from within, and defile the man. | 23 All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.” The Faith of a Gentile Woman |
And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid. | 24Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre. He didn’t want anyone to know which house he was staying in, but he couldn’t keep it a secret. |
For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet: | 25Right away a woman who had heard about him came and fell at his feet. Her little girl was possessed by an evil spirit, |
The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. | 26and she begged him to cast out the demon from her daughter. Since she was a Gentile, born in Syrian Phoenicia, |
But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs. | 27Jesus told her, “First I should feed the children—my own family, the Jews. It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.” |
And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs. | 28She replied, “That’s true, Lord, but even the dogs under the table are allowed to eat the scraps from the children’s plates.” |
And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter. | 29 “Good answer!” he said. “Now go home, for the demon has left your daughter.” |
And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed. | 30And when she arrived home, she found her little girl lying quietly in bed, and the demon was gone. Jesus Heals a Deaf Man |
And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. | 31Jesus left Tyre and went up to Sidon before going back to the Sea of Galilee and the region of the Ten Towns. |
And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him. | 32A deaf man with a speech impediment was brought to him, and the people begged Jesus to lay his hands on the man to heal him. |
And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue; | 33Jesus led him away from the crowd so they could be alone. He put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then, spitting on his own fingers, he touched the man’s tongue. |
And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. | 34Looking up to heaven, he sighed and said, “Ephphatha,” which means, “Be opened!” |
And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. | 35Instantly the man could hear perfectly, and his tongue was freed so he could speak plainly! |
And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; | 36Jesus told the crowd not to tell anyone, but the more he told them not to, the more they spread the news. |
And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak. | 37They were completely amazed and said again and again, “Everything he does is wonderful. He even makes the deaf to hear and gives speech to those who cannot speak.” |
