Then Job responded,1Then Job answered:
"How long will you torment me And crush me with words?2“How long will you torment me and crush me with your words?
"These ten times you have insulted me; You are not ashamed to wrong me.3Ten times now you have reproached me; you shamelessly mistreat me.
"Even if I have truly erred, My error lodges with me.4Even if I have truly gone astray, my error concerns me alone.
"If indeed you vaunt yourselves against me And prove my disgrace to me,5If indeed you would exalt yourselves above me and use my disgrace against me,
Know then that God has wronged me And has closed His net around me.6then understand that it is God who has wronged me and drawn His net around me.
"Behold, I cry, 'Violence!' but I get no answer; I shout for help, but there is no justice.7Though I cry out, ‘Violence!’ I get no response; though I call for help, there is no justice.
"He has walled up my way so that I cannot pass, And He has put darkness on my paths.8He has blocked my way so I cannot pass; He has veiled my paths with darkness.
"He has stripped my honor from me And removed the crown from my head.9He has stripped me of my honor and removed the crown from my head.
"He breaks me down on every side, and I am gone; And He has uprooted my hope like a tree.10He tears me down on every side until I am gone; He uproots my hope like a tree.
"He has also kindled His anger against me And considered me as His enemy.11His anger burns against me, and He counts me among His enemies.
"His troops come together, And build up their way against me And camp around my tent.12His troops advance together; they construct a ramp against me and encamp around my tent.
"He has removed my brothers far from me, And my acquaintances are completely estranged from me.13He has removed my brothers from me; my acquaintances have abandoned me.
"My relatives have failed, And my intimate friends have forgotten me.14My kinsmen have failed me, and my friends have forgotten me.
"Those who live in my house and my maids consider me a stranger. I am a foreigner in their sight.15My guests and maidservants count me as a stranger; I am a foreigner in their sight.
"I call to my servant, but he does not answer; I have to implore him with my mouth.16I call for my servant, but he does not answer, though I implore him with my own mouth.
"My breath is offensive to my wife, And I am loathsome to my own brothers.17My breath is repulsive to my wife, and I am loathsome to my own family.
"Even young children despise me; I rise up and they speak against me.18Even little boys scorn me; when I appear, they deride me.
"All my associates abhor me, And those I love have turned against me.19All my best friends despise me, and those I love have turned against me.
"My bone clings to my skin and my flesh, And I have escaped only by the skin of my teeth.20My skin and flesh cling to my bones; I have escaped by the skin of my teeth.
"Pity me, pity me, O you my friends, For the hand of God has struck me.21Have pity on me, my friends, have pity, for the hand of God has struck me.
"Why do you persecute me as God does, And are not satisfied with my flesh?22Why do you persecute me as God does? Will you never get enough of my flesh?
"Oh that my words were written! Oh that they were inscribed in a book!23I wish that my words were recorded and inscribed in a book,
"That with an iron stylus and lead They were engraved in the rock forever!24by an iron stylus on lead, or chiseled in stone forever.
"As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, And at the last He will take His stand on the earth.25But I know that my Redeemer lives, and in the end He will stand upon the earth.
"Even after my skin is destroyed, Yet from my flesh I shall see God;26Even after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God.
Whom I myself shall behold, And whom my eyes will see and not another. My heart faints within me!27I will see Him for myself; my eyes will behold Him, and not as a stranger. How my heart yearns within me!
"If you say, 'How shall we persecute him?' And 'What pretext for a case against him can we find?'28If you say, ‘Let us persecute him, since the root of the matter lies with him,’
"Then be afraid of the sword for yourselves, For wrath brings the punishment of the sword, So that you may know there is judgment."29then you should fear the sword yourselves, because wrath brings punishment by the sword, so that you may know there is a judgment.”
