New American Standard Bible 1995 | New International Version |
Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. | 1Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. |
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary | 2Let the redeemed of the LORD tell their story-- those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, |
And gathered from the lands, From the east and from the west, From the north and from the south. | 3those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south. |
They wandered in the wilderness in a desert region; They did not find a way to an inhabited city. | 4Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle. |
They were hungry and thirsty; Their soul fainted within them. | 5They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He delivered them out of their distresses. | 6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. |
He led them also by a straight way, To go to an inhabited city. | 7He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! | 8Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, |
For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good. | 9for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. |
There were those who dwelt in darkness and in the shadow of death, Prisoners in misery and chains, | 10Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness, prisoners suffering in iron chains, |
Because they had rebelled against the words of God And spurned the counsel of the Most High. | 11because they rebelled against God's commands and despised the plans of the Most High. |
Therefore He humbled their heart with labor; They stumbled and there was none to help. | 12So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses. | 13Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. |
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death And broke their bands apart. | 14He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! | 15Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, |
For He has shattered gates of bronze And cut bars of iron asunder. | 16for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron. |
Fools, because of their rebellious way, And because of their iniquities, were afflicted. | 17Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities. |
Their soul abhorred all kinds of food, And they drew near to the gates of death. | 18They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses. | 19Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. |
He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions. | 20He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! | 21Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. |
Let them also offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, And tell of His works with joyful singing. | 22Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy. |
Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters; | 23Some went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters. |
They have seen the works of the LORD, And His wonders in the deep. | 24They saw the works of the LORD, his wonderful deeds in the deep. |
For He spoke and raised up a stormy wind, Which lifted up the waves of the sea. | 25For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves. |
They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; Their soul melted away in their misery. | 26They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. |
They reeled and staggered like a drunken man, And were at their wits' end. | 27They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they were at their wits' end. |
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses. | 28Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. |
He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed. | 29He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. |
Then they were glad because they were quiet, So He guided them to their desired haven. | 30They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! | 31Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. |
Let them extol Him also in the congregation of the people, And praise Him at the seat of the elders. | 32Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders. |
He changes rivers into a wilderness And springs of water into a thirsty ground; | 33He turned rivers into a desert, flowing springs into thirsty ground, |
A fruitful land into a salt waste, Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it. | 34and fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who lived there. |
He changes a wilderness into a pool of water And a dry land into springs of water; | 35He turned the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs; |
And there He makes the hungry to dwell, So that they may establish an inhabited city, | 36there he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city where they could settle. |
And sow fields and plant vineyards, And gather a fruitful harvest. | 37They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest; |
Also He blesses them and they multiply greatly, And He does not let their cattle decrease. | 38he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased, and he did not let their herds diminish. |
When they are diminished and bowed down Through oppression, misery and sorrow, | 39Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity and sorrow; |
He pours contempt upon princes And makes them wander in a pathless waste. | 40he who pours contempt on nobles made them wander in a trackless waste. |
But He sets the needy securely on high away from affliction, And makes his families like a flock. | 41But he lifted the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks. |
The upright see it and are glad; But all unrighteousness shuts its mouth. | 42The upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths. |
Who is wise? Let him give heed to these things, And consider the lovingkindnesses of the LORD. | 43Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder the loving deeds of the LORD. |
