And Jesus was saying to them, "Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power."1Jesus went on to say, “I tell you the truth, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Kingdom of God arrive in great power!” The Transfiguration
Six days later, Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John, and brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them;2Six days later Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone. As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed,
and His garments became radiant and exceedingly white, as no launderer on earth can whiten them.3and his clothes became dazzling white, far whiter than any earthly bleach could ever make them.
Elijah appeared to them along with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus.4Then Elijah and Moses appeared and began talking with Jesus.
Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah."5Peter exclaimed, “Rabbi, it’s wonderful for us to be here! Let’s make three shelters as memorials —one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
For he did not know what to answer; for they became terrified.6He said this because he didn’t really know what else to say, for they were all terrified.
Then a cloud formed, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, "This is My beloved Son, listen to Him!"7Then a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son. Listen to him.”
All at once they looked around and saw no one with them anymore, except Jesus alone.8Suddenly, when they looked around, Moses and Elijah were gone, and they saw only Jesus with them.
As they were coming down from the mountain, He gave them orders not to relate to anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man rose from the dead.9As they went back down the mountain, he told them not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
They seized upon that statement, discussing with one another what rising from the dead meant.10So they kept it to themselves, but they often asked each other what he meant by “rising from the dead.”
They asked Him, saying, "Why is it that the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"11Then they asked him, “Why do the teachers of religious law insist that Elijah must return before the Messiah comes? ”
And He said to them, "Elijah does first come and restore all things. And yet how is it written of the Son of Man that He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt?12Jesus responded, “Elijah is indeed coming first to get everything ready. Yet why do the Scriptures say that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be treated with utter contempt?
"But I say to you that Elijah has indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wished, just as it is written of him."13 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they chose to abuse him, just as the Scriptures predicted.” Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy
When they came back to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and some scribes arguing with them.14When they returned to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd surrounding them, and some teachers of religious law were arguing with them.
Immediately, when the entire crowd saw Him, they were amazed and began running up to greet Him.15When the crowd saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with awe, and they ran to greet him.
And He asked them, "What are you discussing with them?"16 “What is all this arguing about?” Jesus asked.
And one of the crowd answered Him, "Teacher, I brought You my son, possessed with a spirit which makes him mute;17One of the men in the crowd spoke up and said, “Teacher, I brought my son so you could heal him. He is possessed by an evil spirit that won’t let him talk.
and whenever it seizes him, it slams him to the ground and he foams at the mouth, and grinds his teeth and stiffens out. I told Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not do it."18And whenever this spirit seizes him, it throws him violently to the ground. Then he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast out the evil spirit, but they couldn’t do it.”
And He answered them and said, "O unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him to Me!"19Jesus said to them, “You faithless people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”
They brought the boy to Him. When he saw Him, immediately the spirit threw him into a convulsion, and falling to the ground, he began rolling around and foaming at the mouth.20So they brought the boy. But when the evil spirit saw Jesus, it threw the child into a violent convulsion, and he fell to the ground, writhing and foaming at the mouth.
And He asked his father, "How long has this been happening to him?" And he said, "From childhood.21 “How long has this been happening?” Jesus asked the boy’s father. He replied, “Since he was a little boy.
"It has often thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!"22The spirit often throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him. Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.”
And Jesus said to him, "'If You can?' All things are possible to him who believes."23 “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.”
Immediately the boy's father cried out and said, "I do believe; help my unbelief."24The father instantly cried out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”
When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly gathering, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and do not enter him again."25When Jesus saw that the crowd of onlookers was growing, he rebuked the evil spirit. “Listen, you spirit that makes this boy unable to hear and speak,” he said. “I command you to come out of this child and never enter him again!”
After crying out and throwing him into terrible convulsions, it came out; and the boy became so much like a corpse that most of them said, "He is dead!"26Then the spirit screamed and threw the boy into another violent convulsion and left him. The boy appeared to be dead. A murmur ran through the crowd as people said, “He’s dead.”
But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him; and he got up.27But Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to his feet, and he stood up.
When He came into the house, His disciples began questioning Him privately, "Why could we not drive it out?"28Afterward, when Jesus was alone in the house with his disciples, they asked him, “Why couldn’t we cast out that evil spirit?”
And He said to them, "This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer."29Jesus replied, “This kind can be cast out only by prayer. ” Jesus Again Predicts His Death
From there they went out and began to go through Galilee, and He did not want anyone to know about it.30Leaving that region, they traveled through Galilee. Jesus didn’t want anyone to know he was there,
For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, "The Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise three days later."31for he wanted to spend more time with his disciples and teach them. He said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies. He will be killed, but three days later he will rise from the dead.”
But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him.32They didn’t understand what he was saying, however, and they were afraid to ask him what he meant. The Greatest in the Kingdom
They came to Capernaum; and when He was in the house, He began to question them, "What were you discussing on the way?"33After they arrived at Capernaum and settled in a house, Jesus asked his disciples, “What were you discussing out on the road?”
But they kept silent, for on the way they had discussed with one another which of them was the greatest.34But they didn’t answer, because they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest.
Sitting down, He called the twelve and said to them, "If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all."35He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, “Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.”
Taking a child, He set him before them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them,36Then he put a little child among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them,
"Whoever receives one child like this in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me does not receive Me, but Him who sent Me."37 “Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not only me but also my Father who sent me.” Using the Name of Jesus
John said to Him, "Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us."38John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone using your name to cast out demons, but we told him to stop because he wasn’t in our group.”
But Jesus said, "Do not hinder him, for there is no one who will perform a miracle in My name, and be able soon afterward to speak evil of Me.39 “Don’t stop him!” Jesus said. “No one who performs a miracle in my name will soon be able to speak evil of me.
"For he who is not against us is for us.40 Anyone who is not against us is for us.
"For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because of your name as followers of Christ, truly I say to you, he will not lose his reward.41 If anyone gives you even a cup of water because you belong to the Messiah, I tell you the truth, that person will surely be rewarded.
"Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe to stumble, it would be better for him if, with a heavy millstone hung around his neck, he had been cast into the sea.42 “But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone hung around your neck.
"If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life crippled, than, having your two hands, to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire,43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one hand than to go into the unquenchable fires of hell with two hands.
where THEIR WORM DOES NOT DIE, AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED.44
"If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame, than, having your two feet, to be cast into hell,45 If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one foot than to be thrown into hell with two feet.
where THEIR WORM DOES NOT DIE, AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED.46
"If your eye causes you to stumble, throw it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, than, having two eyes, to be cast into hell,47 And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out. It’s better to enter the Kingdom of God with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,
where THEIR WORM DOES NOT DIE, AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED.48 ‘where the maggots never die and the fire never goes out.’
"For everyone will be salted with fire.49 “For everyone will be tested with fire.
"Salt is good; but if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another."50 Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again? You must have the qualities of salt among yourselves and live in peace with each other.”
