The LORD visited Sarah just as he had said he would and did for Sarah what he had promised.1Now the LORD attended to Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what He had promised.
So Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the appointed time that God had told him.2So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised.
Abraham named his son--whom Sarah bore to him--Isaac.3And Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore to him.
When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him just as God had commanded him to do.4When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God had commanded him.
(Now Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.) 5Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
Sarah said, "God has made me laugh. Everyone who hears about this will laugh with me."6Then Sarah said, “God has made me laugh, and everyone who hears of this will laugh with me.”
She went on to say, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have given birth to a son for him in his old age!" 7She added, “Who would have told Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”
The child grew and was weaned. Abraham prepared a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.8So the child grew and was weaned, and Abraham held a great feast on the day Isaac was weaned.
But Sarah noticed the son of Hagar the Egyptian--the son whom Hagar had borne to Abraham--mocking.9But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking her son,
So she said to Abraham, "Banish that slave woman and her son, for the son of that slave woman will not be an heir along with my son Isaac!" 10and she said to Abraham, “Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac!”
Sarah's demand displeased Abraham greatly because Ishmael was his son.11Now this matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son Ishmael.
But God said to Abraham, "Do not be upset about the boy or your slave wife. Do all that Sarah is telling you because through Isaac your descendants will be counted.12But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed about the boy and your maidservant. Listen to everything that Sarah tells you, for through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.
But I will also make the son of the slave wife into a great nation, for he is your descendant too." 13But I will also make a nation of the slave woman’s son, because he is your offspring.”
Early in the morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He put them on her shoulders, gave her the child, and sent her away. So she went wandering aimlessly through the wilderness of Beer Sheba.14Early in the morning, Abraham got up, took bread and a skin of water, put them on Hagar’s shoulders, and sent her away with the boy. She left and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba.
When the water in the skin was gone, she shoved the child under one of the shrubs.15When the water in the skin was gone, she left the boy under one of the bushes.
Then she went and sat down by herself across from him at quite a distance, about a bowshot away; for she thought, "I refuse to watch the child die." So she sat across from him and wept uncontrollably. 16Then she went off and sat down nearby, about a bowshot away, for she said, “I cannot bear to watch the boy die!” And as she sat nearby, she lifted up her voice and wept.
But God heard the boy's voice. The angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and asked her, "What is the matter, Hagar? Don't be afraid, for God has heard the boy's voice right where he is crying.17Then God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, “What is wrong, Hagar? Do not be afraid, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he lies.
Get up! Help the boy up and hold him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation."18Get up, lift up the boy, and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”
Then God enabled Hagar to see a well of water. She went over and filled the skin with water, and then gave the boy a drink. 19Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.
God was with the boy as he grew. He lived in the wilderness and became an archer.20And God was with the boy, and he grew up and settled in the wilderness and became a great archer.
He lived in the wilderness of Paran. His mother found a wife for him from the land of Egypt. 21And while he was dwelling in the Wilderness of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
At that time Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, said to Abraham, "God is with you in all that you do.22At that time Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army said to Abraham, “God is with you in all that you do.
Now swear to me right here in God's name that you will not deceive me, my children, or my descendants. Show me, and the land where you are staying, the same loyalty that I have shown you." 23Now, therefore, swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or descendants. Show to me and to the country in which you reside the same kindness that I have shown to you.”
Abraham said, "I swear to do this."24And Abraham replied, “I swear it.”
But Abraham lodged a complaint against Abimelech concerning a well that Abimelech's servants had seized.25But when Abraham complained to Abimelech about a well that Abimelech’s servants had seized,
"I do not know who has done this thing," Abimelech replied. "Moreover, you did not tell me. I did not hear about it until today." 26Abimelech replied, “I do not know who has done this. You did not tell me, so I have not heard about it until today.”
Abraham took some sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelech. The two of them made a treaty.27So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelech, and the two men made a covenant.
Then Abraham set seven ewe lambs apart from the flock by themselves.28Abraham separated seven ewe lambs from the flock,
Abimelech asked Abraham, "What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs that you have set apart?"29and Abimelech asked him, “Why have you set apart these seven ewe lambs?”
He replied, "You must take these seven ewe lambs from my hand as legal proof that I dug this well."30He replied, “You are to accept the seven ewe lambs from my hand as my witness that I dug this well.”
That is why he named that place Beer Sheba, because the two of them swore an oath there. 31So that place was called Beersheba, because it was there that the two of them swore an oath.
So they made a treaty at Beer Sheba. Then Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, returned to the land of the Philistines.32After they had made the covenant at Beersheba, Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army got up and returned to the land of the Philistines.
Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beer Sheba. There he worshiped the LORD, the eternal God.33And Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the LORD, the Eternal God.
So Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines for quite some time. 34And Abraham resided in the land of the Philistines for a long time.
