Thessalonians 5
NET Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
NET BibleEnglish Standard Version
Now on the topic of times and seasons, brothers and sisters, you have no need for anything to be written to you.1Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you.
For you know quite well that the day of the Lord will come in the same way as a thief in the night.2For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
Now when they are saying, "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction comes on them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will surely not escape.3While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
But you, brothers and sisters, are not in the darkness for the day to overtake you like a thief would.4But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief.
For you all are sons of the light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of the darkness.5For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness.
So then we must not sleep as the rest, but must stay alert and sober.6So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober.
For those who sleep, sleep at night and those who get drunk are drunk at night.7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night.
But since we are of the day, we must stay sober by putting on the breastplate of faith and love and as a helmet our hope for salvation.8But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.
For God did not destine us for wrath but for gaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.9For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
He died for us so that whether we are alert or asleep we will come to life together with him.10who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him.
Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, just as you are in fact doing. 11Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who labor among you and preside over you in the Lord and admonish you,12We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you,
and to esteem them most highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.13and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.
And we urge you, brothers and sisters, admonish the undisciplined, comfort the discouraged, help the weak, be patient toward all.14And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.
See that no one pays back evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good for one another and for all.15See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.
Always rejoice,16Rejoice always,
constantly pray,17pray without ceasing,
in everything give thanks. For this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.18give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Do not extinguish the Spirit.19Do not quench the Spirit.
Do not treat prophecies with contempt.20Do not despise prophecies,
But examine all things; hold fast to what is good.21but test everything; hold fast what is good.
Stay away from every form of evil. 22Abstain from every form of evil.
Now may the God of peace himself make you completely holy and may your spirit and soul and body be kept entirely blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.23Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
He who calls you is trustworthy, and he will in fact do this.24He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.
Brothers and sisters, pray for us too.25Brothers, pray for us.
Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss.26Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.
I call on you solemnly in the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters.27I put you under oath before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. 28The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
