From Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those temporarily residing abroad (in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, the province of Asia, and Bithynia) who are chosen | 1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen |
according to the foreknowledge of God the Father by being set apart by the Spirit for obedience and for sprinkling with Jesus Christ's blood. May grace and peace be yours in full measure! | 2according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure. |
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he gave us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, | 3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, |
that is, into an inheritance imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. It is reserved in heaven for you, | 4to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, |
who by God's power are protected through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. | 5who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. |
This brings you great joy, although you may have to suffer for a short time in various trials. | 6In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, |
Such trials show the proven character of your faith, which is much more valuable than gold--gold that is tested by fire, even though it is passing away--and will bring praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. | 7so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; |
You have not seen him, but you love him. You do not see him now but you believe in him, and so you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, | 8and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, |
because you are attaining the goal of your faith--the salvation of your souls. | 9obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls. |
Concerning this salvation, the prophets who predicted the grace that would come to you searched and investigated carefully. | 10As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, |
They probed into what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when he testified beforehand about the sufferings appointed for Christ and his subsequent glory. | 11seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. |
They were shown that they were serving not themselves but you, in regard to the things now announced to you through those who proclaimed the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven--things angels long to catch a glimpse of. | 12It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven-- things into which angels long to look. |
Therefore, get your minds ready for action by being fully sober, and set your hope completely on the grace that will be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed. | 13Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. |
Like obedient children, do not comply with the evil urges you used to follow in your ignorance, | 14As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, |
but, like the Holy One who called you, become holy yourselves in all of your conduct, | 15but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; |
for it is written, "You shall be holy, because I am holy." | 16because it is written, "YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY." |
And if you address as Father the one who impartially judges according to each one's work, live out the time of your temporary residence here in reverence. | 17If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one's work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; |
You know that from your empty way of life inherited from your ancestors you were ransomed--not by perishable things like silver or gold, | 18knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, |
but by precious blood like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb, namely Christ. | 19but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. |
He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was manifested in these last times for your sake. | 20For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you |
Through him you now trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. | 21who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. |
You have purified your souls by obeying the truth in order to show sincere mutual love. So love one another earnestly from a pure heart. | 22Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart, |
You have been born anew, not from perishable but from imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. | 23for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God. |
For all flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of the grass; the grass withers and the flower falls off, | 24For, "ALL FLESH IS LIKE GRASS, AND ALL ITS GLORY LIKE THE FLOWER OF GRASS. THE GRASS WITHERS, AND THE FLOWER FALLS OFF, |
but the word of the Lord endures forever. And this is the word that was proclaimed to you. | 25BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURES FOREVER." And this is the word which was preached to you. |
