By David. O LORD, fight those who fight with me! Attack those who attack me! 1A Psalm of David. Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; Fight against those who fight against me.
Grab your small shield and large shield, and rise up to help me! 2Take hold of buckler and shield And rise up for my help.
Use your spear and lance against those who chase me! Assure me with these words: "I am your deliverer!" 3Draw also the spear and the battle-axe to meet those who pursue me; Say to my soul, "I am your salvation."
May those who seek my life be embarrassed and humiliated! May those who plan to harm me be turned back and ashamed! 4Let those be ashamed and dishonored who seek my life; Let those be turned back and humiliated who devise evil against me.
May they be like wind-driven chaff, as the LORD's angel attacks them! 5Let them be like chaff before the wind, With the angel of the LORD driving them on.
May their path be dark and slippery, as the LORD's angel chases them! 6Let their way be dark and slippery, With the angel of the LORD pursuing them.
I did not harm them, but they hid a net to catch me and dug a pit to trap me. 7For without cause they hid their net for me; Without cause they dug a pit for my soul.
Let destruction take them by surprise! Let the net they hid catch them! Let them fall into destruction! 8Let destruction come upon him unawares, And let the net which he hid catch himself; Into that very destruction let him fall.
Then I will rejoice in the LORD and be happy because of his deliverance. 9And my soul shall rejoice in the LORD; It shall exult in His salvation.
With all my strength I will say, "O LORD, who can compare to you? You rescue the oppressed from those who try to overpower them; the oppressed and needy from those who try to rob them." 10All my bones will say, "LORD, who is like You, Who delivers the afflicted from him who is too strong for him, And the afflicted and the needy from him who robs him?"
Violent men perjure themselves, and falsely accuse me. 11Malicious witnesses rise up; They ask me of things that I do not know.
They repay me evil for the good I have done; I am overwhelmed with sorrow. 12They repay me evil for good, To the bereavement of my soul.
When they were sick, I wore sackcloth, and refrained from eating food. (If I am lying, may my prayers go unanswered!) 13But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth; I humbled my soul with fasting, And my prayer kept returning to my bosom.
I mourned for them as I would for a friend or my brother. I bowed down in sorrow as if I were mourning for my mother. 14I went about as though it were my friend or brother; I bowed down mourning, as one who sorrows for a mother.
But when I stumbled, they rejoiced and gathered together; they gathered together to ambush me. They tore at me without stopping to rest. 15But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered themselves together; The smiters whom I did not know gathered together against me, They slandered me without ceasing.
When I tripped, they taunted me relentlessly, and tried to bite me. 16Like godless jesters at a feast, They gnashed at me with their teeth.
O Lord, how long are you going to just stand there and watch this? Rescue me from their destructive attacks; guard my life from the young lions! 17Lord, how long will You look on? Rescue my soul from their ravages, My only life from the lions.
Then I will give you thanks in the great assembly; I will praise you before a large crowd of people! 18I will give You thanks in the great congregation; I will praise You among a mighty throng.
Do not let those who are my enemies for no reason gloat over me! Do not let those who hate me without cause carry out their wicked schemes! 19Do not let those who are wrongfully my enemies rejoice over me; Nor let those who hate me without cause wink maliciously.
For they do not try to make peace with others, but plan ways to deceive those who are unsuspecting. 20For they do not speak peace, But they devise deceitful words against those who are quiet in the land.
They are ready to devour me; they say, "Aha! Aha! We've got you!" 21They opened their mouth wide against me; They said, "Aha, aha, our eyes have seen it!"
But you take notice, LORD! O Lord, do not remain far away from me! 22You have seen it, O LORD, do not keep silent; O Lord, do not be far from me.
Rouse yourself, wake up and vindicate me! My God and Lord, defend my just cause! 23Stir up Yourself, and awake to my right And to my cause, my God and my Lord.
Vindicate me by your justice, O LORD my God! Do not let them gloat over me! 24Judge me, O LORD my God, according to Your righteousness, And do not let them rejoice over me.
Do not let them say to themselves, "Aha! We have what we wanted!" Do not let them say, "We have devoured him!" 25Do not let them say in their heart, "Aha, our desire!" Do not let them say, "We have swallowed him up!"
May those who want to harm me be totally embarrassed and ashamed! May those who arrogantly taunt me be covered with shame and humiliation! 26Let those be ashamed and humiliated altogether who rejoice at my distress; Let those be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves over me.
May those who desire my vindication shout for joy and rejoice! May they continually say, "May the LORD be praised, for he wants his servant to be secure." 27Let them shout for joy and rejoice, who favor my vindication; And let them say continually, "The LORD be magnified, Who delights in the prosperity of His servant."
Then I will tell others about your justice, and praise you all day long. 28And my tongue shall declare Your righteousness And Your praise all day long.
