New International VersionInternational Standard Version
Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town.1After getting into a boat, Jesus crossed to the other side and came to his own city.
Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven."2All at once some people brought him a paralyzed man lying on a stretcher. When Jesus saw their faith, he told the paralyzed man, "Be courageous, son! Your sins are forgiven."
At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, "This fellow is blaspheming!"3Then some of the scribes told themselves, "This fellow is blaspheming!"
Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, "Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts?4But Jesus, knowing what they were thinking, replied, "Why do you have such evil thoughts in your hearts?
Which is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'?5Which is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'?
But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." So he said to the paralyzed man, "Get up, take your mat and go home."6But so you will know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins…" he told the paralyzed man, "Get up, pick up your stretcher, and go home!"
Then the man got up and went home.7So the man got up and went home.
When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man.8When the crowds saw this, they became frightened and glorified God for giving such authority to humans.
As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.9As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's desk and told him, "Follow me." So he got up and followed him.
While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples.10While he was having dinner at Matthew's home, many tax collectors and sinners arrived and began eating with Jesus and his disciples.
When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"11The Pharisees saw this and asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"
On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.12When Jesus heard that, he said, "Healthy people don't need a physician, but sick people do.
But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."13Go and learn what this means: 'I want mercy and not sacrifice,' because I did not come to call righteous people, but sinners."
Then John's disciples came and asked him, "How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?"14Then John's disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples don't fast?"
Jesus answered, "How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.15Jesus asked them, "The wedding guests can't mourn as long as the groom is with them, can they? But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast."
"No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse.16"No one patches an old garment with a piece of unshrunk cloth, because the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results.
Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved."17Nor do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will spill out, and the skins will be ruined. Instead, they pour new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved."
While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him and said, "My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live."18While Jesus was telling them these things, an official came up and fell down before him. "My daughter has just died," he said. "But come and lay your hand on her, and she will live."
Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.19So Jesus got up and followed him, along with his disciples.
Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak.20Just then a woman who had been suffering from chronic bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the tassel of his garment,
She said to herself, "If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed."21because she had been saying to herself, "If I just touch his robe, I will get well."
Jesus turned and saw her. "Take heart, daughter," he said, "your faith has healed you." And the woman was healed at that moment.22When Jesus turned and saw her, he said, "Be courageous, daughter! Your faith has made you well." And from that very hour the woman was well.
When Jesus entered the synagogue leader's house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes,23When Jesus came to the official's house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion,
he said, "Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep." But they laughed at him.24he said, "Go away! The young lady hasn't died, but is sleeping." But they ridiculed him with laughter.
After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up.25When the crowd had been driven outside, he went in, took her by the hand, and the young lady got up.
News of this spread through all that region.26The news of this spread throughout that land.
As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!"27As Jesus was traveling on from there, two blind men followed him, shouting, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!"
When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" "Yes, Lord," they replied.28When he had gone into the house, the blind men came to him. Jesus asked them, "Do you believe I can do this?" They told him, "Yes, Lord!"
Then he touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith let it be done to you";29Then he touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith, let it be done for you!"
and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, "See that no one knows about this."30And their eyes were opened. Then Jesus sternly told them, "See to it that nobody knows about this."
But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.31But they went out and spread the news about him throughout that region.
While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus.32As the men were going out, a man who couldn't talk because he was demon-possessed was brought to him.
And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel."33As soon as the demon had been driven out, the man began to speak. The crowds were amazed and said, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!"
But the Pharisees said, "It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons."34But the Pharisees kept saying, "He drives out demons by the ruler of demons."
Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.35Then Jesus began traveling throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every illness.
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.36When he saw the crowds, he was deeply moved with compassion for them, because they were troubled and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.37Then he told his disciples, "The harvest is vast, but the workers are few.
Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."38So ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest."
