Abraham had taken another wife, whose name was Keturah.1Now Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah.
She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah.2She bore to him Zimran and Jokshan and Medan and Midian and Ishbak and Shuah.
Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan; the descendants of Dedan were the Ashurites, the Letushites and the Leummites.3Jokshan became the father of Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim and Letushim and Leummim.
The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanok, Abida and Eldaah. All these were descendants of Keturah.4The sons of Midian were Ephah and Epher and Hanoch and Abida and Eldaah. All these were the sons of Keturah.
Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac.5Now Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac;
But while he was still living, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them away from his son Isaac to the land of the east.6but to the sons of his concubines, Abraham gave gifts while he was still living, and sent them away from his son Isaac eastward, to the land of the east.
Abraham lived a hundred and seventy-five years.7These are all the years of Abraham's life that he lived, one hundred and seventy-five years.
Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, an old man and full of years; and he was gathered to his people.8Abraham breathed his last and died in a ripe old age, an old man and satisfied with life; and he was gathered to his people.
His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite,9Then his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, facing Mamre,
the field Abraham had bought from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah.10the field which Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth; there Abraham was buried with Sarah his wife.
After Abraham's death, God blessed his son Isaac, who then lived near Beer Lahai Roi.11It came about after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac lived by Beer-lahai-roi.
This is the account of the family line of Abraham's son Ishmael, whom Sarah's slave, Hagar the Egyptian, bore to Abraham.12Now these are the records of the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's maid, bore to Abraham;
These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, listed in the order of their birth: Nebaioth the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,13and these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael, and Kedar and Adbeel and Mibsam
Mishma, Dumah, Massa,14and Mishma and Dumah and Massa,
Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah.15Hadad and Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah.
These were the sons of Ishmael, and these are the names of the twelve tribal rulers according to their settlements and camps.16These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages, and by their camps; twelve princes according to their tribes.
Ishmael lived a hundred and thirty-seven years. He breathed his last and died, and he was gathered to his people.17These are the years of the life of Ishmael, one hundred and thirty-seven years; and he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.
His descendants settled in the area from Havilah to Shur, near the eastern border of Egypt, as you go toward Ashur. And they lived in hostility toward all the tribes related to them.18They settled from Havilah to Shur which is east of Egypt as one goes toward Assyria; he settled in defiance of all his relatives.
This is the account of the family line of Abraham's son Isaac. Abraham became the father of Isaac,19Now these are the records of the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham became the father of Isaac;
and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram and sister of Laban the Aramean.20and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife.
Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was childless. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.21Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD answered him and Rebekah his wife conceived.
The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, "Why is this happening to me?" So she went to inquire of the LORD.22But the children struggled together within her; and she said, "If it is so, why then am I this way?" So she went to inquire of the LORD.
The LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger."23The LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger."
When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb.24When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
The first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy garment; so they named him Esau.25Now the first came forth red, all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau.
After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau's heel; so he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.26Afterward his brother came forth with his hand holding on to Esau's heel, so his name was called Jacob; and Isaac was sixty years old when she gave birth to them.
The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the open country, while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents.27When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was a peaceful man, living in tents.
Isaac, who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.28Now Isaac loved Esau, because he had a taste for game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished.29When Jacob had cooked stew, Esau came in from the field and he was famished;
He said to Jacob, "Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I'm famished!" (That is why he was also called Edom.)30and Esau said to Jacob, "Please let me have a swallow of that red stuff there, for I am famished." Therefore his name was called Edom.
Jacob replied, "First sell me your birthright."31But Jacob said, "First sell me your birthright."
"Look, I am about to die," Esau said. "What good is the birthright to me?"32Esau said, "Behold, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?"
But Jacob said, "Swear to me first." So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob.33And Jacob said, "First swear to me"; so he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.
Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left. So Esau despised his birthright.34Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and rose and went on his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
