| 1Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, | 1In the same way, you wives must accept the authority of your husbands. | 5For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, | 5This is how the holy women of old made themselves beautiful. They put their trust in God and accepted the authority of their husbands. |
| 6like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. | 6For instance, Sarah obeyed her husband, Abraham, and called him her master. | 7Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers. | 7In the same way, you husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat your wife with understanding as you live together. She may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God’s gift of new life. | 8Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. | 8Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude. |
| 9Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. | 9Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing. |

| 13Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? | 13Now, who will want to harm you if you are eager to do good? |
| 14But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened." | 14But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats. |
| 15But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, | 15Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. |
| 16keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. | 16But do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ. |
| 17For it is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. | 17Remember, it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is what God wants, than to suffer for doing wrong! |
| 18For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. | 18Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit. |
| 19After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits-- | 19So he went and preached to the spirits in prison— |
| 20to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, | 20those who disobeyed God long ago when God waited patiently while Noah was building his boat. Only eight people were saved from drowning in that terrible flood. |
| 21and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also--not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, | 21And that water is a picture of baptism, which now saves you, not by removing dirt from your body, but as a response to God from a clean conscience. It is effective because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. |
| 22who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand--with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him. | 22Now Christ has gone to heaven. He is seated in the place of honor next to God, and all the angels and authorities and powers accept his authority. |
