Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ: To those chosen, living as exiles dispersed abroad in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, chosen
elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.2according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient and to be sprinkled with the blood of Jesus Christ. May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead
to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,4and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.
who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.5You are being guarded by God's power through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials,6You rejoice in this, even though now for a short time, if necessary, you suffer grief in various trials
that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,7so that the proven character of your faith--more valuable than gold which, though perishable, is refined by fire--may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,8Though you have not seen him, you love him; though not seeing him now, you believe in him, and you rejoice with inexpressible and glorious joy,
receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.9because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you,10Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who prophesied about the grace that would come to you, searched and carefully investigated.
searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.11They inquired into what time or what circumstances the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when he testified in advance to the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.
To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into.12It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you. These things have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven--angels long to catch a glimpse of these things.
Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;13Therefore, with your minds ready for action, be sober-minded and set your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance;14As obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires of your former ignorance.
but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,15But as the one who called you is holy, you also are to be holy in all your conduct;
because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”16for it is written, Be holy, because I am holy.
And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear;17If you appeal to the Father who judges impartially according to each one's work, you are to conduct yourselves in reverence during your time living as strangers.
knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers,18For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from your fathers, not with perishable things like silver or gold,
but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.19but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb.
He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you20He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was revealed in these last times for you.
who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.21Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,22Since you have purified yourselves by your obedience to the truth, so that you show sincere brotherly love for each other, from a pure heart love one another constantly,
having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,23because you have been born again--not of perishable seed but of imperishable--through the living and enduring word of God.
because “All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, And its flower falls away,24For All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like a flower of the grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls,
But the word of the LORD endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.25but the word of the Lord endures forever. And this word is the gospel that was proclaimed to you.
