Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To the elect who are exiles of the Dispersion throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, chosen
elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.2according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and sanctified by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by His blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,4and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, reserved in heaven for you,
who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.5who through faith are shielded by God’s power for the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials,6In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in various trials
that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,7so that the proven character of your faith—more precious than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,8Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.9now that you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you,10Concerning this salvation, the prophets who foretold the grace to come to you searched and investigated carefully,
searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.11trying to determine the time and setting to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.
To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into.12It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, when they foretold the things now announced by those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.
Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;13Therefore prepare your minds for action. Be sober-minded. Set your hope fully on the grace to be given you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance;14As obedient children, do not conform to the passions of your former ignorance.
but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,15But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do,
because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”16for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear;17Since you call on a Father who judges each one’s work impartially, conduct yourselves in reverent fear during your stay as foreigners.
knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers,18For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life you inherited from your forefathers,
but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.19but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or spot.
He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you20He was known before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in the last times for your sake.
who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.21Through Him you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him; and so your faith and hope are in God.
Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,22Since you have purified your souls by obedience to the truth so that you have a genuine love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from a pure heart.
having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,23For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
because “All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, And its flower falls away,24For, “All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,
But the word of the LORD endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.25but the word of the Lord stands forever.” And this is the word that was proclaimed to you.
