Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.2according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,4to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.5who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials,6In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,
that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,7so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,8Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory,
receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.9obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you,10Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully,
searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.11inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.
To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into.12It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;13Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance;14As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance,
but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,15but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,
because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”16since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear;17And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile,
knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers,18knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold,
but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.19but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you20He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you
who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.21who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,22Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart,
having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,23since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;
because “All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, And its flower falls away,24for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls,
But the word of the LORD endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.25but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.
