New King James VersionEnglish Standard Version
Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes came together to Him, having come from Jerusalem.1Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem,
Now when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, with unwashed hands, they found fault.2they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed.
For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands in a special way, holding the tradition of the elders.3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly, holding to the tradition of the elders,
When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other things which they have received and hold, like the washing of cups, pitchers, copper vessels, and couches.4and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.)
Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?”5And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?”
He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.6And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;
And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’7in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’
For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men— the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.”8You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”
He said to them, “All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.9And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition!
For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’10For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’
But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban”—’ (that is, a gift to God),11But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God)—
then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother,12then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother,
making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”13thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”
When He had called all the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear Me, everyone, and understand:14And he called the people to him again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand:
There is nothing that enters a man from outside which can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are the things that defile a man.15There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.”
If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!”16
When He had entered a house away from the crowd, His disciples asked Him concerning the parable.17And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable.
So He said to them, “Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him,18And he said to them, “Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him,
because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods?”19since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.)
And He said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man.20And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him.
For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,21For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,
thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.22coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.
All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”23All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”
From there He arose and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And He entered a house and wanted no one to know it, but He could not be hidden.24And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden.
For a woman whose young daughter had an unclean spirit heard about Him, and she came and fell at His feet.25But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet.
The woman was a Greek, a Syro-Phoenician by birth, and she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter.26Now the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter.
But Jesus said to her, “Let the children be filled first, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.”27And he said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”
And she answered and said to Him, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs under the table eat from the children’s crumbs.”28But she answered him, “Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”
Then He said to her, “For this saying go your way; the demon has gone out of your daughter.”29And he said to her, “For this statement you may go your way; the demon has left your daughter.”
And when she had come to her house, she found the demon gone out, and her daughter lying on the bed.30And she went home and found the child lying in bed and the demon gone.
Again, departing from the region of Tyre and Sidon, He came through the midst of the region of Decapolis to the Sea of Galilee.31Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis.
Then they brought to Him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech, and they begged Him to put His hand on him.32And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged him to lay his hand on him.
And He took him aside from the multitude, and put His fingers in his ears, and He spat and touched his tongue.33And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue.
Then, looking up to heaven, He sighed, and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.”34And looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.”
Immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly.35And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly.
Then He commanded them that they should tell no one; but the more He commanded them, the more widely they proclaimed it.36And Jesus charged them to tell no one. But the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it.
And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He makes both the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”37And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
