| 1Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes came together to Him, having come from Jerusalem. | 1The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus |
| 2Now when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, with unwashed hands, they found fault. | 2and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. |
| 3For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands in a special way, holding the tradition of the elders. | 3(The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. |

| 5Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?” | 5So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, "Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?" |
| 6He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. | 6He replied, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: "'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. |
| 7And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ | 7They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.' |
| 8For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men— the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.” | 8You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions." |
| 9He said to them, “All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition. | 9And he continued, "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions! |
| 10For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ | 10For Moses said, 'Honor your father and mother,' and, 'Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.' |
| 11But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban”—’ (that is, a gift to God), | 11But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)-- |
| 12then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother, | 12then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. |
| 13making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.” | 13Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that." |
| 14When He had called all the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear Me, everyone, and understand: | 14Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. |
| 15There is nothing that enters a man from outside which can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are the things that defile a man. | 15Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them." |

| 17When He had entered a house away from the crowd, His disciples asked Him concerning the parable. | 17After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable. |
| 18So He said to them, “Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him, | 18"Are you so dull?" he asked. "Don't you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? |
| 19because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods?” | 19For it doesn't go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body." (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.) |
| 20And He said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man. | 20He went on: "What comes out of a person is what defiles them. |
| 21For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, | 21For it is from within, out of a person's heart, that evil thoughts come--sexual immorality, theft, murder, |
| 22thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. | 22adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. |
| 23All these evil things come from within and defile a man.” | 23All these evils come from inside and defile a person." |
| 24From there He arose and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And He entered a house and wanted no one to know it, but He could not be hidden. | 24Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. |
| 25For a woman whose young daughter had an unclean spirit heard about Him, and she came and fell at His feet. | 25In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet. |
| 26The woman was a Greek, a Syro-Phoenician by birth, and she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter. | 26The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter. |
| 27But Jesus said to her, “Let the children be filled first, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” | 27"First let the children eat all they want," he told her, "for it is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to the dogs." |
| 28And she answered and said to Him, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs under the table eat from the children’s crumbs.” | 28"Lord," she replied, "even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs." |
| 29Then He said to her, “For this saying go your way; the demon has gone out of your daughter.” | 29Then he told her, "For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter." |
| 30And when she had come to her house, she found the demon gone out, and her daughter lying on the bed. | 30She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone. |
| 31Again, departing from the region of Tyre and Sidon, He came through the midst of the region of Decapolis to the Sea of Galilee. | 31Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. |
| 32Then they brought to Him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech, and they begged Him to put His hand on him. | 32There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him. |
| 33And He took him aside from the multitude, and put His fingers in his ears, and He spat and touched his tongue. | 33After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man's ears. Then he spit and touched the man's tongue. |
| 34Then, looking up to heaven, He sighed, and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” | 34He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, "Ephphatha!" (which means "Be opened!"). |
| 35Immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly. | 35At this, the man's ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly. |
| 36Then He commanded them that they should tell no one; but the more He commanded them, the more widely they proclaimed it. | 36Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. |
| 37And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He makes both the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.” | 37People were overwhelmed with amazement. "He has done everything well," they said. "He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak." |
