Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth.1As he was walking along, he observed a man who had been blind from birth.
And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”2His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that caused him to be born blind?"
Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.3Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned. This happened so that God's work might be revealed in him.
I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.4I must do the work of the one who sent me while it is day. Night is approaching, when no one can work.
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”5As long as I'm in the world, I'm the light of the world."
When He had said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay.6After saying this, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he spread the mud on the man's eyes
And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing.7and told him, "Go and wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is translated "Sent One"). So he went off, washed, and came back seeing.
Therefore the neighbors and those who previously had seen that he was blind said, “Is not this he who sat and begged?”8Then the neighbors and those who had previously seen him as a beggar said, "This is the man who used to sit and beg, isn't it?"
Some said, “This is he.” Others said, “He is like him.” He said, “I am he.9Some were saying, "It's him," while others were saying, "No, but it's someone like him." But he himself kept saying, "It's me!"
Therefore they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?”10So they asked him, "How, then, did you gain your eyesight?"
He answered and said, “A Man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed, and I received sight.”11He said, "The man named Jesus made some mud, spread it on my eyes, and told me, 'Go to Siloam and wash.' So off I went and washed, and I received my sight."
Then they said to him, “Where is He?” He said, “I do not know.”12They asked him, "Where is that man?" He said, "I don't know!"
They brought him who formerly was blind to the Pharisees.13So they brought to the Pharisees the man who had once been blind.
Now it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes.14Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and healed his eyes.
Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”15So the Pharisees also began to ask him how he had gained his sight. He told them, "He put mud on my eyes, then I washed, and now I can see."
Therefore some of the Pharisees said, “This Man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.” Others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them.16Some of the Pharisees began to remark, "This man is not from God because he does not keep the Sabbath." But others were saying, "How can a sinful man perform such signs?" And there was a division among them.
They said to the blind man again, “What do you say about Him because He opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.”17So they asked the formerly blind man again, "What do you say about him, since it was your eyes he healed?" He said, "He is a prophet."
But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind and received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight.18The Jewish leaders did not believe that the man had been blind and had gained sight until they summoned his parents
And they asked them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?”19and asked them, "Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? How does he now see?"
His parents answered them and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;20His parents replied, "We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.
but by what means he now sees we do not know, or who opened his eyes we do not know. He is of age; ask him. He will speak for himself.”21But we don't know how it is that he now sees, and we don't know who opened his eyes. Ask him. He is of age and can speak for himself."
His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that He was Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue.22His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, since the Jewish leaders had already agreed that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be thrown out of the synagogue.
Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”23That's why his parents said, "He is of age. Ask him."
So they again called the man who was blind, and said to him, “Give God the glory! We know that this Man is a sinner.”24The Jewish leaders summoned the man who had been blind a second time and told him, "Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner."
He answered and said, “Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.”25But he responded, "I don't know whether he is a sinner or not. The one thing I do know is that I used to be blind and now I can see!"
Then they said to him again, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?”26Then they asked him, "What did he do to you? How did he heal your eyes?"
He answered them, “I told you already, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples?”27He answered them, "I've already told you, but you didn't listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don't want to become his disciples, too, do you?"
Then they reviled him and said, “You are His disciple, but we are Moses’ disciples.28At this, they turned on him in fury and said, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses!
We know that God spoke to Moses; as for this fellow, we do not know where He is from.”29We know that God has spoken to Moses, but we do not know where this fellow comes from."
The man answered and said to them, “Why, this is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He has opened my eyes!30The man answered them, "This is an amazing thing! You don't know where he comes from, yet he healed my eyes.
Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.31We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but he does listen to anyone who worships him and does his will.
Since the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind.32Ever since creation it has never been heard that anyone healed the eyes of a man who was born blind.
If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing.”33If this man were not from God, he couldn't do anything like that."
They answered and said to him, “You were completely born in sins, and are you teaching us?” And they cast him out.34They asked him, "You were born a sinner and you are trying to instruct us?" And they threw him out.
Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when He had found him, He said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of God?”35Jesus heard that they had thrown him out. So when he found him, he asked him, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"
He answered and said, “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?”36He answered, "And who is he, sir? Tell me, so that I may believe in him."
And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him and it is He who is talking with you.”37Jesus told him, "You have seen him. He is the person who is talking with you."
Then he said, “Lord, I believe!” And he worshiped Him.38He said, "Lord, I do believe," and worshipped him.
And Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind.”39Then Jesus said, "I have come into this world to judge it, so that those who are blind may see and so that those who see may become blind."
Then some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, and said to Him, “Are we blind also?”40Some of the Pharisees who were near him overheard this and asked him, "We aren't blind, too, are we?"
Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains.41Jesus told them, "If you were blind, you would not have any sin. But now that you insist, 'We see,' your sin still exists."
