Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying,1Then some Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem to Jesus and asked,
“Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”2"Why do your disciples disregard the tradition of the elders? They don't wash their hands when they eat."
He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?3But he answered them, "Why do you also disregard the commandment of God because of your tradition?
For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’4Because God said, 'You are to honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Whoever curses father or mother must certainly be put to death.'
But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”—5But you say, 'Whoever tells his father or his mother, "Whatever support you might have received from me has been given to God,"
then he need not honor his father or mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.6does not have to honor his father.' Because of your tradition, then, you have disregarded the authority of God's word.
Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:7You hypocrites! How well did Isaiah prophesy of you when he said,
‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.8These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ”9Their worship of me is empty, because they teach human rules as doctrines.'"
When He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear and understand:10Then calling out to the crowd, he addressed them, "Listen and understand!
Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”11It is not what goes into the mouth that makes a person unclean. It is what comes out of the mouth that makes a person unclean."
Then His disciples came and said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?”12Then the disciples came and asked him, "Do you realize that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?"
But He answered and said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.13He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be pulled up by the roots.
Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.”14Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind. If one blind person leads another blind person, both will fall into a ditch."
Then Peter answered and said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.”15Then Peter told him, "Explain to us this parable."
So Jesus said, “Are you also still without understanding?16Jesus said, "Are you still so ignorant?
Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated?17Don't you know that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and then is expelled as waste?
But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man.18But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and it is those things that make a person unclean.
For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.19It is out of the heart that evil thoughts come, as well as murder, adultery, sexual immorality, stealing, false testimony, and slander.
These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.”20These are the things that make a person unclean. But eating with unwashed hands doesn't make a person unclean."
Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon.21Then Jesus left that place and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.”22Suddenly, a Canaanite woman from that territory came near and began to shout, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed!"
But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.”23But he didn't answer her at all. Then his disciples came up and kept urging him, "Send her away, because she keeps on screaming as she follows us."
But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”24But he replied, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the nation of Israel."
Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!”25Then she came and fell down before him, saying, "Lord, help me!"
But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.”26He replied, "It's not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the puppies."
And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”27She said, "Yes, Lord. But even the puppies eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' tables."
Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.28Then Jesus answered her, "Lady, your faith is great! What you want is granted." That very hour her daughter was healed.
Jesus departed from there, skirted the Sea of Galilee, and went up on the mountain and sat down there.29Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a hillside and sat down.
Then great multitudes came to Him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at Jesus’ feet, and He healed them.30Large crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, those unable to talk, and many others. They placed them at his feet, and he healed them.
So the multitude marveled when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.31As a result, the crowd was amazed to see those who were unable to talk speaking, the crippled healed, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. So they praised the God of Israel.
Now Jesus called His disciples to Himself and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.”32Then Jesus called his disciples and said, "I have compassion for the crowd because they have already been with me for three days and have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away without food, or they may faint on the road."
Then His disciples said to Him, “Where could we get enough bread in the wilderness to fill such a great multitude?”33The disciples asked him, "Where in the wilderness are we to get enough bread to feed such a crowd?"
Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few little fish.”34Jesus asked them, "How many loaves of bread do you have?" They said, "Seven, and a few small fish."
So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.35Ordering the crowd to sit down on the ground,
And He took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitude.36he took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks. Then he broke them in pieces and kept giving them to his disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
So they all ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets full of the fragments that were left.37All of them ate until they were filled, then the disciples picked up what was left of the broken pieces—seven baskets full.
Now those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.38Now those who had eaten were four thousand men, besides women and children.
And He sent away the multitude, got into the boat, and came to the region of Magdala.39After he sent the crowds away, he got into a boat and went to the region of Magadan.
