Now in the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.1Now there were these prophets and teachers in the church at Antioch: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius the Cyrenian, Manaen (a close friend of Herod the tetrarch from childhood) and Saul.
As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”2While they were serving the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."
Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away.3Then, after they had fasted and prayed and placed their hands on them, they sent them off.
So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus.4So Barnabas and Saul, sent out by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus.
And when they arrived in Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. They also had John as their assistant.5When they arrived in Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. (Now they also had John as their assistant.)
Now when they had gone through the island to Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew whose name was Bar-Jesus,6When they had crossed over the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a magician, a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus,
who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. This man called for Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God.7who was with the proconsul Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. The proconsul summoned Barnabas and Saul and wanted to hear the word of God.
But Elymas the sorcerer (for so his name is translated) withstood them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith.8But the magician Elymas (for that is the way his name is translated) opposed them, trying to turn the proconsul away from the faith.
Then Saul, who also is called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him9But Saul (also known as Paul), filled with the Holy Spirit, stared straight at him
and said, “O full of all deceit and all fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease perverting the straight ways of the Lord?10and said, "You who are full of all deceit and all wrongdoing, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness--will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?
And now, indeed, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for a time.” And immediately a dark mist fell on him, and he went around seeking someone to lead him by the hand.11Now look, the hand of the Lord is against you, and you will be blind, unable to see the sun for a time!" Immediately mistiness and darkness came over him, and he went around seeking people to lead him by the hand.
Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had been done, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord.12Then when the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, because he was greatly astounded at the teaching about the Lord.
Now when Paul and his party set sail from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia; and John, departing from them, returned to Jerusalem.13Then Paul and his companions put out to sea from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia, but John left them and returned to Jerusalem.
But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and sat down.14Moving on from Perga, they arrived at Pisidian Antioch, and on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down.
And after the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, “Men and brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.”15After the reading from the law and the prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent them a message, saying, "Brothers, if you have any message of exhortation for the people, speak it."
Then Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, “Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen:16So Paul stood up, gestured with his hand and said, "Men of Israel, and you Gentiles who fear God, listen:
The God of this people Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm He brought them out of it.17The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors and made the people great during their stay as foreigners in the country of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it.
Now for a time of about forty years He put up with their ways in the wilderness.18For a period of about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness.
And when He had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He distributed their land to them by allotment.19After he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave his people their land as an inheritance.
“After that He gave them judges for about four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet.20All this took about four hundred fifty years. After this he gave them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet.
And afterward they asked for a king; so God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.21Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled forty years.
And when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.’22After removing him, God raised up David their king. He testified about him: 'I have found David the son of Jesse to be a man after my heart, who will accomplish everything I want him to do.'
From this man’s seed, according to the promise, God raised up for Israel a Savior—Jesus—23From the descendants of this man God brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, just as he promised.
after John had first preached, before His coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.24Before Jesus arrived, John had proclaimed a baptism for repentance to all the people of Israel.
And as John was finishing his course, he said, ‘Who do you think I am? I am not He. But behold, there comes One after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to loose.’25But while John was completing his mission, he said repeatedly, 'What do you think I am? I am not he. But look, one is coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet!'
“Men and brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to you the word of this salvation has been sent.26Brothers, descendants of Abraham's family, and those Gentiles among you who fear God, the message of this salvation has been sent to us.
For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning Him.27For the people who live in Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize him, and they fulfilled the sayings of the prophets that are read every Sabbath by condemning him.
And though they found no cause for death in Him, they asked Pilate that He should be put to death.28Though they found no basis for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.
Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb.29When they had accomplished everything that was written about him, they took him down from the cross and placed him in a tomb.
But God raised Him from the dead.30But God raised him from the dead,
He was seen for many days by those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are His witnesses to the people.31and for many days he appeared to those who had accompanied him from Galilee to Jerusalem. These are now his witnesses to the people.
And we declare to you glad tidings—that promise which was made to the fathers.32And we proclaim to you the good news about the promise to our ancestors,
God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm: ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.’33that this promise God has fulfilled to us, their children, by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second psalm, 'You are my Son; today I have fathered you.'
And that He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, He has spoken thus: ‘I will give you the sure mercies of David.’34But regarding the fact that he has raised Jesus from the dead, never again to be in a state of decay, God has spoken in this way: 'I will give you the holy and trustworthy promises made to David.'
Therefore He also says in another Psalm: ‘You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption.’35Therefore he also says in another psalm, 'You will not permit your Holy One to experience decay.'
“For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption;36For David, after he had served God's purpose in his own generation, died, was buried with his ancestors, and experienced decay,
but He whom God raised up saw no corruption.37but the one whom God raised up did not experience decay.
Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins;38Therefore let it be known to you, brothers, that through this one forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you,
and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.39and by this one everyone who believes is justified from everything from which the law of Moses could not justify you.
Beware therefore, lest what has been spoken in the prophets come upon you:40Watch out, then, that what is spoken about by the prophets does not happen to you:
‘Behold, you despisers, Marvel and perish! For I work a work in your days, A work which you will by no means believe, Though one were to declare it to you.’ ”41Look, you scoffers; be amazed and perish! For I am doing a work in your days, a work you would never believe, even if someone tells you.'"
So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath.42As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people were urging them to speak about these things on the next Sabbath.
Now when the congregation had broken up, many of the Jews and devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.43When the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and God-fearing proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who were speaking with them and were persuading them to continue in the grace of God.
On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God.44On the next Sabbath almost the whole city assembled together to hear the word of the Lord.
But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul.45But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy, and they began to contradict what Paul was saying by reviling him.
Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, “It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles.46Both Paul and Barnabas replied courageously, "It was necessary to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we are turning to the Gentiles.
For so the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have set you as a light to the Gentiles, That you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ”47For this is what the Lord has commanded us: 'I have appointed you to be a light for the Gentiles, to bring salvation to the ends of the earth.'"
Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.48When the Gentiles heard this, they began to rejoice and praise the word of the Lord, and all who had been appointed for eternal life believed.
And the word of the Lord was being spread throughout all the region.49So the word of the Lord was spreading through the entire region.
But the Jews stirred up the devout and prominent women and the chief men of the city, raised up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region.50But the Jews incited the God-fearing women of high social standing and the prominent men of the city, stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and threw them out of their region.
But they shook off the dust from their feet against them, and came to Iconium.51So after they shook the dust off their feet in protest against them, they went to Iconium.
And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.52And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
