New King James Version | New International Version |
Do not rejoice, O Israel, with joy like other peoples, For you have played the harlot against your God. You have made love for hire on every threshing floor. | 1Do not rejoice, Israel; do not be jubilant like the other nations. For you have been unfaithful to your God; you love the wages of a prostitute at every threshing floor. |
The threshing floor and the winepress Shall not feed them, And the new wine shall fail in her. | 2Threshing floors and winepresses will not feed the people; the new wine will fail them. |
They shall not dwell in the LORD’s land, But Ephraim shall return to Egypt, And shall eat unclean things in Assyria. | 3They will not remain in the LORD's land; Ephraim will return to Egypt and eat unclean food in Assyria. |
They shall not offer wine offerings to the LORD, Nor shall their sacrifices be pleasing to Him. It shall be like bread of mourners to them; All who eat it shall be defiled. For their bread shall be for their own life; It shall not come into the house of the LORD. | 4They will not pour out wine offerings to the LORD, nor will their sacrifices please him. Such sacrifices will be to them like the bread of mourners; all who eat them will be unclean. This food will be for themselves; it will not come into the temple of the LORD. |
What will you do in the appointed day, And in the day of the feast of the LORD? | 5What will you do on the day of your appointed festivals, on the feast days of the LORD? |
For indeed they are gone because of destruction. Egypt shall gather them up; Memphis shall bury them. Nettles shall possess their valuables of silver; Thorns shall be in their tents. | 6Even if they escape from destruction, Egypt will gather them, and Memphis will bury them. Their treasures of silver will be taken over by briers, and thorns will overrun their tents. |
The days of punishment have come; The days of recompense have come. Israel knows! The prophet is a fool, The spiritual man is insane, Because of the greatness of your iniquity and great enmity. | 7The days of punishment are coming, the days of reckoning are at hand. Let Israel know this. Because your sins are so many and your hostility so great, the prophet is considered a fool, the inspired person a maniac. |
The watchman of Ephraim is with my God; But the prophet is a fowler’s snare in all his ways— Enmity in the house of his God. | 8The prophet, along with my God, is the watchman over Ephraim, yet snares await him on all his paths, and hostility in the house of his God. |
They are deeply corrupted, As in the days of Gibeah. He will remember their iniquity; He will punish their sins. | 9They have sunk deep into corruption, as in the days of Gibeah. God will remember their wickedness and punish them for their sins. |
“I found Israel Like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers As the firstfruits on the fig tree in its first season. But they went to Baal Peor, And separated themselves to that shame; They became an abomination like the thing they loved. | 10"When I found Israel, it was like finding grapes in the desert; when I saw your ancestors, it was like seeing the early fruit on the fig tree. But when they came to Baal Peor, they consecrated themselves to that shameful idol and became as vile as the thing they loved. |
As for Ephraim, their glory shall fly away like a bird— No birth, no pregnancy, and no conception! | 11Ephraim's glory will fly away like a bird-- no birth, no pregnancy, no conception. |
Though they bring up their children, Yet I will bereave them to the last man. Yes, woe to them when I depart from them! | 12Even if they rear children, I will bereave them of every one. Woe to them when I turn away from them! |
Just as I saw Ephraim like Tyre, planted in a pleasant place, So Ephraim will bring out his children to the murderer.” | 13I have seen Ephraim, like Tyre, planted in a pleasant place. But Ephraim will bring out their children to the slayer." |
Give them, O LORD— What will You give? Give them a miscarrying womb And dry breasts! | 14Give them, LORD-- what will you give them? Give them wombs that miscarry and breasts that are dry. |
“All their wickedness is in Gilgal, For there I hated them. Because of the evil of their deeds I will drive them from My house; I will love them no more. All their princes are rebellious. | 15"Because of all their wickedness in Gilgal, I hated them there. Because of their sinful deeds, I will drive them out of my house. I will no longer love them; all their leaders are rebellious. |
Ephraim is stricken, Their root is dried up; They shall bear no fruit. Yes, were they to bear children, I would kill the darlings of their womb.” | 16Ephraim is blighted, their root is withered, they yield no fruit. Even if they bear children, I will slay their cherished offspring." |
My God will cast them away, Because they did not obey Him; And they shall be wanderers among the nations. | 17My God will reject them because they have not obeyed him; they will be wanderers among the nations. |
