Psalm 38
NLT Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationEnglish Standard Version
O LORD, don’t rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your rage!1O LORD, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath!
Your arrows have struck deep, and your blows are crushing me.2For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has come down on me.
Because of your anger, my whole body is sick; my health is broken because of my sins.3There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin.
My guilt overwhelms me— it is a burden too heavy to bear.4For my iniquities have gone over my head; like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me.
My wounds fester and stink because of my foolish sins.5My wounds stink and fester because of my foolishness,
I am bent over and racked with pain. All day long I walk around filled with grief.6I am utterly bowed down and prostrate; all the day I go about mourning.
A raging fever burns within me, and my health is broken.7For my sides are filled with burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh.
I am exhausted and completely crushed. My groans come from an anguished heart.8I am feeble and crushed; I groan because of the tumult of my heart.
You know what I long for, Lord; you hear my every sigh.9O Lord, all my longing is before you; my sighing is not hidden from you.
My heart beats wildly, my strength fails, and I am going blind.10My heart throbs; my strength fails me, and the light of my eyes—it also has gone from me.
My loved ones and friends stay away, fearing my disease. Even my own family stands at a distance.11My friends and companions stand aloof from my plague, and my nearest kin stand far off.
Meanwhile, my enemies lay traps to kill me. Those who wish me harm make plans to ruin me. All day long they plan their treachery.12Those who seek my life lay their snares; those who seek my hurt speak of ruin and meditate treachery all day long.
But I am deaf to all their threats. I am silent before them as one who cannot speak.13But I am like a deaf man; I do not hear, like a mute man who does not open his mouth.
I choose to hear nothing, and I make no reply.14I have become like a man who does not hear, and in whose mouth are no rebukes.
For I am waiting for you, O LORD. You must answer for me, O Lord my God.15But for you, O LORD, do I wait; it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer.
I prayed, “Don’t let my enemies gloat over me or rejoice at my downfall.”16For I said, “Only let them not rejoice over me, who boast against me when my foot slips!”
I am on the verge of collapse, facing constant pain.17For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever before me.
But I confess my sins; I am deeply sorry for what I have done.18I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin.
I have many aggressive enemies; they hate me without reason.19But my foes are vigorous, they are mighty, and many are those who hate me wrongfully.
They repay me evil for good and oppose me for pursuing good.20Those who render me evil for good accuse me because I follow after good.
Do not abandon me, O LORD. Do not stand at a distance, my God.21Do not forsake me, O LORD! O my God, be not far from me!
Come quickly to help me, O Lord my savior.22Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation!
