O LORD, don’t rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your rage!1A psalm of David, written to get God's attention. O LORD, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger! Do not continue to punish me in your raging fury!
Your arrows have struck deep, and your blows are crushing me.2For your arrows pierce me, and your hand presses me down.
Because of your anger, my whole body is sick; my health is broken because of my sins.3My whole body is sick because of your judgment; I am deprived of health because of my sin.
My guilt overwhelms me— it is a burden too heavy to bear.4For my sins overwhelm me; like a heavy load, they are too much for me to bear.
My wounds fester and stink because of my foolish sins.5My wounds are infected and starting to smell, because of my foolish sins.
I am bent over and racked with pain. All day long I walk around filled with grief.6I am dazed and completely humiliated; all day long I walk around mourning.
A raging fever burns within me, and my health is broken.7For I am overcome with shame and my whole body is sick.
I am exhausted and completely crushed. My groans come from an anguished heart.8I am numb with pain and severely battered; I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel.
You know what I long for, Lord; you hear my every sigh.9O Lord, you understand my heart's desire; my groaning is not hidden from you.
My heart beats wildly, my strength fails, and I am going blind.10My heart beats quickly; my strength leaves me; I can hardly see.
My loved ones and friends stay away, fearing my disease. Even my own family stands at a distance.11Because of my condition, even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance; my neighbors stand far away.
Meanwhile, my enemies lay traps to kill me. Those who wish me harm make plans to ruin me. All day long they plan their treachery.12Those who seek my life try to entrap me; those who want to harm me speak destructive words; all day long they say deceitful things.
But I am deaf to all their threats. I am silent before them as one who cannot speak.13But I am like a deaf man--I hear nothing; I am like a mute who cannot speak.
I choose to hear nothing, and I make no reply.14I am like a man who cannot hear and is incapable of arguing his defense.
For I am waiting for you, O LORD. You must answer for me, O Lord my God.15Yet I wait for you, O LORD! You will respond, O Lord, my God!
I prayed, “Don’t let my enemies gloat over me or rejoice at my downfall.”16I have prayed for deliverance, because otherwise they will gloat over me; when my foot slips they will arrogantly taunt me.
I am on the verge of collapse, facing constant pain.17For I am about to stumble, and I am in constant pain.
But I confess my sins; I am deeply sorry for what I have done.18Yes, I confess my wrongdoing, and I am concerned about my sins.
I have many aggressive enemies; they hate me without reason.19But those who are my enemies for no reason are numerous; those who hate me without cause outnumber me.
They repay me evil for good and oppose me for pursuing good.20They repay me evil for the good I have done; though I have tried to do good to them, they hurl accusations at me.
Do not abandon me, O LORD. Do not stand at a distance, my God.21Do not abandon me, O LORD! My God, do not remain far away from me!
Come quickly to help me, O Lord my savior.22Hurry and help me, O Lord, my deliverer!
