New Living Translation | King James Bible |
My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I groan for help? | 1To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? |
Every day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer. Every night I lift my voice, but I find no relief. | 2O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent. |
Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. | 3But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. |
Our ancestors trusted in you, and you rescued them. | 4Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them. |
They cried out to you and were saved. They trusted in you and were never disgraced. | 5They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded. |
But I am a worm and not a man. I am scorned and despised by all! | 6But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. |
Everyone who sees me mocks me. They sneer and shake their heads, saying, | 7All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, |
“Is this the one who relies on the LORD? Then let the LORD save him! If the LORD loves him so much, let the LORD rescue him!” | 8He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. |
Yet you brought me safely from my mother’s womb and led me to trust you at my mother’s breast. | 9But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts. |
I was thrust into your arms at my birth. You have been my God from the moment I was born. | 10I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly. |
Do not stay so far from me, for trouble is near, and no one else can help me. | 11Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. |
My enemies surround me like a herd of bulls; fierce bulls of Bashan have hemmed me in! | 12Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. |
Like lions they open their jaws against me, roaring and tearing into their prey. | 13They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. |
My life is poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax, melting within me. | 14I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. |
My strength has dried up like sunbaked clay. My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You have laid me in the dust and left me for dead. | 15My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. |
My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs; an evil gang closes in on me. They have pierced my hands and feet. | 16For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. |
I can count all my bones. My enemies stare at me and gloat. | 17I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. |
They divide my garments among themselves and throw dice for my clothing. | 18They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. |
O LORD, do not stay far away! You are my strength; come quickly to my aid! | 19But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me. |
Save me from the sword; spare my precious life from these dogs. | 20Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. |
Snatch me from the lion’s jaws and from the horns of these wild oxen. | 21Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns. |
I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters. I will praise you among your assembled people. | 22I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. |
Praise the LORD, all you who fear him! Honor him, all you descendants of Jacob! Show him reverence, all you descendants of Israel! | 23Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel. |
For he has not ignored or belittled the suffering of the needy. He has not turned his back on them, but has listened to their cries for help. | 24For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard. |
I will praise you in the great assembly. I will fulfill my vows in the presence of those who worship you. | 25My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him. |
The poor will eat and be satisfied. All who seek the LORD will praise him. Their hearts will rejoice with everlasting joy. | 26The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever. |
The whole earth will acknowledge the LORD and return to him. All the families of the nations will bow down before him. | 27All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. |
For royal power belongs to the LORD. He rules all the nations. | 28For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and he is the governor among the nations. |
Let the rich of the earth feast and worship. Bow before him, all who are mortal, all whose lives will end as dust. | 29All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul. |
Our children will also serve him. Future generations will hear about the wonders of the Lord. | 30A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. |
His righteous acts will be told to those not yet born. They will hear about everything he has done. | 31They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this. |
