New Living Translation | King James Bible |
O God, do not be silent! Do not be deaf. Do not be quiet, O God. | 1A Song or Psalm of Asaph. Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God. |
Don’t you hear the uproar of your enemies? Don’t you see that your arrogant enemies are rising up? | 2For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head. |
They devise crafty schemes against your people; they conspire against your precious ones. | 3They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones. |
“Come,” they say, “let us wipe out Israel as a nation. We will destroy the very memory of its existence.” | 4They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance. |
Yes, this was their unanimous decision. They signed a treaty as allies against you— | 5For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee: |
these Edomites and Ishmaelites; Moabites and Hagrites; | 6The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes; |
Gebalites, Ammonites, and Amalekites; and people from Philistia and Tyre. | 7Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre; |
Assyria has joined them, too, and is allied with the descendants of Lot. Interlude | 8Assur also is joined with them: they have holpen the children of Lot. Selah. |
Do to them as you did to the Midianites and as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon River. | 9Do unto them as unto the Midianites; as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the brook of Kison: |
They were destroyed at Endor, and their decaying corpses fertilized the soil. | 10Which perished at Endor: they became as dung for the earth. |
Let their mighty nobles die as Oreb and Zeeb did. Let all their princes die like Zebah and Zalmunna, | 11Make their nobles like Oreb, and like Zeeb: yea, all their princes as Zebah, and as Zalmunna: |
for they said, “Let us seize for our own use these pasturelands of God!” | 12Who said, Let us take to ourselves the houses of God in possession. |
O my God, scatter them like tumbleweed, like chaff before the wind! | 13O my God, make them like a wheel; as the stubble before the wind. |
As a fire burns a forest and as a flame sets mountains ablaze, | 14As the fire burneth a wood, and as the flame setteth the mountains on fire; |
chase them with your fierce storm; terrify them with your tempest. | 15So persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm. |
Utterly disgrace them until they submit to your name, O LORD. | 16Fill their faces with shame; that they may seek thy name, O LORD. |
Let them be ashamed and terrified forever. Let them die in disgrace. | 17Let them be confounded and troubled for ever; yea, let them be put to shame, and perish: |
Then they will learn that you alone are called the LORD, that you alone are the Most High, supreme over all the earth. | 18That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth. |
