1O God, do not be silent! Do not be deaf. Do not be quiet, O God. | 1A song. A Psalm of Asaph. O God, be not silent; be not speechless; be not still, O God. |
2Don’t you hear the uproar of your enemies? Don’t you see that your arrogant enemies are rising up? | 2See how Your enemies rage, how Your foes have reared their heads. |
3They devise crafty schemes against your people; they conspire against your precious ones. | 3With cunning they scheme against Your people and conspire against those You cherish, |
4“Come,” they say, “let us wipe out Israel as a nation. We will destroy the very memory of its existence.” | 4saying, “Come, let us erase them as a nation; may the name of Israel be remembered no more.” |
5Yes, this was their unanimous decision. They signed a treaty as allies against you— | 5For with one mind they plot together, they form an alliance against You— |
6these Edomites and Ishmaelites; Moabites and Hagrites; | 6the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, of Moab and the Hagrites, |
7Gebalites, Ammonites, and Amalekites; and people from Philistia and Tyre. | 7of Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek, of Philistia with the people of Tyre. |
8Assyria has joined them, too, and is allied with the descendants of Lot. Interlude | 8Even Assyria has joined them, lending strength to the sons of Lot. Selah |
9Do to them as you did to the Midianites and as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon River. | 9Do to them as You did to Midian, as to Sisera and Jabin at the River Kishon, |
10They were destroyed at Endor, and their decaying corpses fertilized the soil. | 10who perished at Endor and became like dung on the ground. |
11Let their mighty nobles die as Oreb and Zeeb did. Let all their princes die like Zebah and Zalmunna, | 11Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, and all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna, |
12for they said, “Let us seize for our own use these pasturelands of God!” | 12who said, “Let us possess for ourselves the pastures of God.” |
13O my God, scatter them like tumbleweed, like chaff before the wind! | 13Make them like tumbleweed, O my God, like chaff before the wind. |
14As a fire burns a forest and as a flame sets mountains ablaze, | 14As fire consumes a forest, as a flame sets the mountains ablaze, |
15chase them with your fierce storm; terrify them with your tempest. | 15so pursue them with Your tempest, and terrify them with Your storm. |
16Utterly disgrace them until they submit to your name, O LORD. | 16Cover their faces with shame, that they may seek Your name, O LORD. |
17Let them be ashamed and terrified forever. Let them die in disgrace. | 17May they be ever ashamed and terrified; may they perish in disgrace. |
18Then they will learn that you alone are called the LORD, that you alone are the Most High, supreme over all the earth. | 18May they know that You alone, whose name is the LORD, are Most High over all the earth. |
