New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
O God, do not be silent! Do not be deaf. Do not be quiet, O God. | 1God, do not rest! Don't be silent! Don't stay inactive, God! |
Don’t you hear the uproar of your enemies? Don’t you see that your arrogant enemies are rising up? | 2See! Your enemies rage; those who hate you issue threats. |
They devise crafty schemes against your people; they conspire against your precious ones. | 3They plot against your people and conspire against your cherished ones. |
“Come,” they say, “let us wipe out Israel as a nation. We will destroy the very memory of its existence.” | 4They say, "Let us go and erase them as a nation so the name of Israel will not be remembered anymore." |
Yes, this was their unanimous decision. They signed a treaty as allies against you— | 5Indeed, they shrewdly planned together, forming an alliance against you— |
these Edomites and Ishmaelites; Moabites and Hagrites; | 6the tents of Edom, the Ishmaelites, Moab, the Hagrites, |
Gebalites, Ammonites, and Amalekites; and people from Philistia and Tyre. | 7Gebal, Ammon, Amalek, Philistia, and the inhabitants of Tyre. |
Assyria has joined them, too, and is allied with the descendants of Lot. Interlude | 8Even Assyria joined them to strengthen the descendants of Lot. Interlude |
Do to them as you did to the Midianites and as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon River. | 9Deal with them as you did to Midian, Sisera, and Jabin at the Kishon Brook. |
They were destroyed at Endor, and their decaying corpses fertilized the soil. | 10They were destroyed at En-dor and became as dung on the ground. |
Let their mighty nobles die as Oreb and Zeeb did. Let all their princes die like Zebah and Zalmunna, | 11Punish their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, and all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna, |
for they said, “Let us seize for our own use these pasturelands of God!” | 12who said, "Let us possess the pastures of God." |
O my God, scatter them like tumbleweed, like chaff before the wind! | 13God, set them up like dried thistles, like straw before the wind. |
As a fire burns a forest and as a flame sets mountains ablaze, | 14Like a fire burning a forest, and a flame setting mountains ablaze. |
chase them with your fierce storm; terrify them with your tempest. | 15Pursue them with your storm and terrify them with your whirlwind. |
Utterly disgrace them until they submit to your name, O LORD. | 16Fill their faces with shame until they seek your name, God. |
Let them be ashamed and terrified forever. Let them die in disgrace. | 17Let them be humiliated and terrified permanently until they die in shame. |
Then they will learn that you alone are called the LORD, that you alone are the Most High, supreme over all the earth. | 18Then they will know that you alone— whose name is LORD— are the Most High over all the earth. |
