New Living TranslationNew American Standard Bible 1995
O LORD, oppose those who oppose me. Fight those who fight against me.1A Psalm of David. Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; Fight against those who fight against me.
Put on your armor, and take up your shield. Prepare for battle, and come to my aid.2Take hold of buckler and shield And rise up for my help.
Lift up your spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Let me hear you say, “I will give you victory!”3Draw also the spear and the battle-axe to meet those who pursue me; Say to my soul, "I am your salvation."
Bring shame and disgrace on those trying to kill me; turn them back and humiliate those who want to harm me.4Let those be ashamed and dishonored who seek my life; Let those be turned back and humiliated who devise evil against me.
Blow them away like chaff in the wind— a wind sent by the angel of the LORD.5Let them be like chaff before the wind, With the angel of the LORD driving them on.
Make their path dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them.6Let their way be dark and slippery, With the angel of the LORD pursuing them.
I did them no wrong, but they laid a trap for me. I did them no wrong, but they dug a pit to catch me.7For without cause they hid their net for me; Without cause they dug a pit for my soul.
So let sudden ruin come upon them! Let them be caught in the trap they set for me! Let them be destroyed in the pit they dug for me.8Let destruction come upon him unawares, And let the net which he hid catch himself; Into that very destruction let him fall.
Then I will rejoice in the LORD. I will be glad because he rescues me.9And my soul shall rejoice in the LORD; It shall exult in His salvation.
With every bone in my body I will praise him: “LORD, who can compare with you? Who else rescues the helpless from the strong? Who else protects the helpless and poor from those who rob them?”10All my bones will say, "LORD, who is like You, Who delivers the afflicted from him who is too strong for him, And the afflicted and the needy from him who robs him?"
Malicious witnesses testify against me. They accuse me of crimes I know nothing about.11Malicious witnesses rise up; They ask me of things that I do not know.
They repay me evil for good. I am sick with despair.12They repay me evil for good, To the bereavement of my soul.
Yet when they were ill, I grieved for them. I denied myself by fasting for them, but my prayers returned unanswered.13But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth; I humbled my soul with fasting, And my prayer kept returning to my bosom.
I was sad, as though they were my friends or family, as if I were grieving for my own mother.14I went about as though it were my friend or brother; I bowed down mourning, as one who sorrows for a mother.
But they are glad now that I am in trouble; they gleefully join together against me. I am attacked by people I don’t even know; they slander me constantly.15But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered themselves together; The smiters whom I did not know gathered together against me, They slandered me without ceasing.
They mock me and call me names; they snarl at me.16Like godless jesters at a feast, They gnashed at me with their teeth.
How long, O Lord, will you look on and do nothing? Rescue me from their fierce attacks. Protect my life from these lions!17Lord, how long will You look on? Rescue my soul from their ravages, My only life from the lions.
Then I will thank you in front of the great assembly. I will praise you before all the people.18I will give You thanks in the great congregation; I will praise You among a mighty throng.
Don’t let my treacherous enemies rejoice over my defeat. Don’t let those who hate me without cause gloat over my sorrow.19Do not let those who are wrongfully my enemies rejoice over me; Nor let those who hate me without cause wink maliciously.
They don’t talk of peace; they plot against innocent people who mind their own business.20For they do not speak peace, But they devise deceitful words against those who are quiet in the land.
They shout, “Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we saw him do it!”21They opened their mouth wide against me; They said, "Aha, aha, our eyes have seen it!"
O LORD, you know all about this. Do not stay silent. Do not abandon me now, O Lord.22You have seen it, O LORD, do not keep silent; O Lord, do not be far from me.
Wake up! Rise to my defense! Take up my case, my God and my Lord.23Stir up Yourself, and awake to my right And to my cause, my God and my Lord.
Declare me not guilty, O LORD my God, for you give justice. Don’t let my enemies laugh about me in my troubles.24Judge me, O LORD my God, according to Your righteousness, And do not let them rejoice over me.
Don’t let them say, “Look, we got what we wanted! Now we will eat him alive!”25Do not let them say in their heart, "Aha, our desire!" Do not let them say, "We have swallowed him up!"
May those who rejoice at my troubles be humiliated and disgraced. May those who triumph over me be covered with shame and dishonor.26Let those be ashamed and humiliated altogether who rejoice at my distress; Let those be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves over me.
But give great joy to those who came to my defense. Let them continually say, “Great is the LORD, who delights in blessing his servant with peace!”27Let them shout for joy and rejoice, who favor my vindication; And let them say continually, "The LORD be magnified, Who delights in the prosperity of His servant."
Then I will proclaim your justice, and I will praise you all day long.28And my tongue shall declare Your righteousness And Your praise all day long.
