O LORD, oppose those who oppose me. Fight those who fight against me.1A Psalm of David. Plead my cause, O LORD, with them that strive with me: fight against them that fight against me.
Put on your armor, and take up your shield. Prepare for battle, and come to my aid.2Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for mine help.
Lift up your spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Let me hear you say, “I will give you victory!”3Draw out also the spear, and stop the way against them that persecute me: say unto my soul, I am thy salvation.
Bring shame and disgrace on those trying to kill me; turn them back and humiliate those who want to harm me.4Let them be confounded and put to shame that seek after my soul: let them be turned back and brought to confusion that devise my hurt.
Blow them away like chaff in the wind— a wind sent by the angel of the LORD.5Let them be as chaff before the wind: and let the angel of the LORD chase them.
Make their path dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them.6Let their way be dark and slippery: and let the angel of the LORD persecute them.
I did them no wrong, but they laid a trap for me. I did them no wrong, but they dug a pit to catch me.7For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit, which without cause they have digged for my soul.
So let sudden ruin come upon them! Let them be caught in the trap they set for me! Let them be destroyed in the pit they dug for me.8Let destruction come upon him at unawares; and let his net that he hath hid catch himself: into that very destruction let him fall.
Then I will rejoice in the LORD. I will be glad because he rescues me.9And my soul shall be joyful in the LORD: it shall rejoice in his salvation.
With every bone in my body I will praise him: “LORD, who can compare with you? Who else rescues the helpless from the strong? Who else protects the helpless and poor from those who rob them?”10All my bones shall say, LORD, who is like unto thee, which deliverest the poor from him that is too strong for him, yea, the poor and the needy from him that spoileth him?
Malicious witnesses testify against me. They accuse me of crimes I know nothing about.11False witnesses did rise up; they laid to my charge things that I knew not.
They repay me evil for good. I am sick with despair.12They rewarded me evil for good to the spoiling of my soul.
Yet when they were ill, I grieved for them. I denied myself by fasting for them, but my prayers returned unanswered.13But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom.
I was sad, as though they were my friends or family, as if I were grieving for my own mother.14I behaved myself as though he had been my friend or brother: I bowed down heavily, as one that mourneth for his mother.
But they are glad now that I am in trouble; they gleefully join together against me. I am attacked by people I don’t even know; they slander me constantly.15But in mine adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together: yea, the abjects gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they did tear me, and ceased not:
They mock me and call me names; they snarl at me.16With hypocritical mockers in feasts, they gnashed upon me with their teeth.
How long, O Lord, will you look on and do nothing? Rescue me from their fierce attacks. Protect my life from these lions!17Lord, how long wilt thou look on? rescue my soul from their destructions, my darling from the lions.
Then I will thank you in front of the great assembly. I will praise you before all the people.18I will give thee thanks in the great congregation: I will praise thee among much people.
Don’t let my treacherous enemies rejoice over my defeat. Don’t let those who hate me without cause gloat over my sorrow.19Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.
They don’t talk of peace; they plot against innocent people who mind their own business.20For they speak not peace: but they devise deceitful matters against them that are quiet in the land.
They shout, “Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we saw him do it!”21Yea, they opened their mouth wide against me, and said, Aha, aha, our eye hath seen it.
O LORD, you know all about this. Do not stay silent. Do not abandon me now, O Lord.22This thou hast seen, O LORD: keep not silence: O Lord, be not far from me.
Wake up! Rise to my defense! Take up my case, my God and my Lord.23Stir up thyself, and awake to my judgment, even unto my cause, my God and my Lord.
Declare me not guilty, O LORD my God, for you give justice. Don’t let my enemies laugh about me in my troubles.24Judge me, O LORD my God, according to thy righteousness; and let them not rejoice over me.
Don’t let them say, “Look, we got what we wanted! Now we will eat him alive!”25Let them not say in their hearts, Ah, so would we have it: let them not say, We have swallowed him up.
May those who rejoice at my troubles be humiliated and disgraced. May those who triumph over me be covered with shame and dishonor.26Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together that rejoice at mine hurt: let them be clothed with shame and dishonour that magnify themselves against me.
But give great joy to those who came to my defense. Let them continually say, “Great is the LORD, who delights in blessing his servant with peace!”27Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the LORD be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.
Then I will proclaim your justice, and I will praise you all day long.28And my tongue shall speak of thy righteousness and of thy praise all the day long.
