New Living TranslationNET Bible
O LORD, oppose those who oppose me. Fight those who fight against me.1By David. O LORD, fight those who fight with me! Attack those who attack me!
Put on your armor, and take up your shield. Prepare for battle, and come to my aid.2Grab your small shield and large shield, and rise up to help me!
Lift up your spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Let me hear you say, “I will give you victory!”3Use your spear and lance against those who chase me! Assure me with these words: "I am your deliverer!"
Bring shame and disgrace on those trying to kill me; turn them back and humiliate those who want to harm me.4May those who seek my life be embarrassed and humiliated! May those who plan to harm me be turned back and ashamed!
Blow them away like chaff in the wind— a wind sent by the angel of the LORD.5May they be like wind-driven chaff, as the LORD's angel attacks them!
Make their path dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them.6May their path be dark and slippery, as the LORD's angel chases them!
I did them no wrong, but they laid a trap for me. I did them no wrong, but they dug a pit to catch me.7I did not harm them, but they hid a net to catch me and dug a pit to trap me.
So let sudden ruin come upon them! Let them be caught in the trap they set for me! Let them be destroyed in the pit they dug for me.8Let destruction take them by surprise! Let the net they hid catch them! Let them fall into destruction!
Then I will rejoice in the LORD. I will be glad because he rescues me.9Then I will rejoice in the LORD and be happy because of his deliverance.
With every bone in my body I will praise him: “LORD, who can compare with you? Who else rescues the helpless from the strong? Who else protects the helpless and poor from those who rob them?”10With all my strength I will say, "O LORD, who can compare to you? You rescue the oppressed from those who try to overpower them; the oppressed and needy from those who try to rob them."
Malicious witnesses testify against me. They accuse me of crimes I know nothing about.11Violent men perjure themselves, and falsely accuse me.
They repay me evil for good. I am sick with despair.12They repay me evil for the good I have done; I am overwhelmed with sorrow.
Yet when they were ill, I grieved for them. I denied myself by fasting for them, but my prayers returned unanswered.13When they were sick, I wore sackcloth, and refrained from eating food. (If I am lying, may my prayers go unanswered!)
I was sad, as though they were my friends or family, as if I were grieving for my own mother.14I mourned for them as I would for a friend or my brother. I bowed down in sorrow as if I were mourning for my mother.
But they are glad now that I am in trouble; they gleefully join together against me. I am attacked by people I don’t even know; they slander me constantly.15But when I stumbled, they rejoiced and gathered together; they gathered together to ambush me. They tore at me without stopping to rest.
They mock me and call me names; they snarl at me.16When I tripped, they taunted me relentlessly, and tried to bite me.
How long, O Lord, will you look on and do nothing? Rescue me from their fierce attacks. Protect my life from these lions!17O Lord, how long are you going to just stand there and watch this? Rescue me from their destructive attacks; guard my life from the young lions!
Then I will thank you in front of the great assembly. I will praise you before all the people.18Then I will give you thanks in the great assembly; I will praise you before a large crowd of people!
Don’t let my treacherous enemies rejoice over my defeat. Don’t let those who hate me without cause gloat over my sorrow.19Do not let those who are my enemies for no reason gloat over me! Do not let those who hate me without cause carry out their wicked schemes!
They don’t talk of peace; they plot against innocent people who mind their own business.20For they do not try to make peace with others, but plan ways to deceive those who are unsuspecting.
They shout, “Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we saw him do it!”21They are ready to devour me; they say, "Aha! Aha! We've got you!"
O LORD, you know all about this. Do not stay silent. Do not abandon me now, O Lord.22But you take notice, LORD! O Lord, do not remain far away from me!
Wake up! Rise to my defense! Take up my case, my God and my Lord.23Rouse yourself, wake up and vindicate me! My God and Lord, defend my just cause!
Declare me not guilty, O LORD my God, for you give justice. Don’t let my enemies laugh about me in my troubles.24Vindicate me by your justice, O LORD my God! Do not let them gloat over me!
Don’t let them say, “Look, we got what we wanted! Now we will eat him alive!”25Do not let them say to themselves, "Aha! We have what we wanted!" Do not let them say, "We have devoured him!"
May those who rejoice at my troubles be humiliated and disgraced. May those who triumph over me be covered with shame and dishonor.26May those who want to harm me be totally embarrassed and ashamed! May those who arrogantly taunt me be covered with shame and humiliation!
But give great joy to those who came to my defense. Let them continually say, “Great is the LORD, who delights in blessing his servant with peace!”27May those who desire my vindication shout for joy and rejoice! May they continually say, "May the LORD be praised, for he wants his servant to be secure."
Then I will proclaim your justice, and I will praise you all day long.28Then I will tell others about your justice, and praise you all day long.
