The LORD kept his word and did for Sarah exactly what he had promised.1The LORD visited Sarah just as he had said he would and did for Sarah what he had promised.
She became pregnant, and she gave birth to a son for Abraham in his old age. This happened at just the time God had said it would.2So Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the appointed time that God had told him.
And Abraham named their son Isaac.3Abraham named his son--whom Sarah bore to him--Isaac.
Eight days after Isaac was born, Abraham circumcised him as God had commanded.4When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him just as God had commanded him to do.
Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born.5(Now Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.)
And Sarah declared, “God has brought me laughter. All who hear about this will laugh with me.6Sarah said, "God has made me laugh. Everyone who hears about this will laugh with me."
Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse a baby? Yet I have given Abraham a son in his old age!” Hagar and Ishmael Are Sent Away7She went on to say, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have given birth to a son for him in his old age!"
When Isaac grew up and was about to be weaned, Abraham prepared a huge feast to celebrate the occasion.8The child grew and was weaned. Abraham prepared a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.
But Sarah saw Ishmael—the son of Abraham and her Egyptian servant Hagar—making fun of her son, Isaac.9But Sarah noticed the son of Hagar the Egyptian--the son whom Hagar had borne to Abraham--mocking.
So she turned to Abraham and demanded, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son. He is not going to share the inheritance with my son, Isaac. I won’t have it!”10So she said to Abraham, "Banish that slave woman and her son, for the son of that slave woman will not be an heir along with my son Isaac!"
This upset Abraham very much because Ishmael was his son.11Sarah's demand displeased Abraham greatly because Ishmael was his son.
But God told Abraham, “Do not be upset over the boy and your servant. Do whatever Sarah tells you, for Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted.12But God said to Abraham, "Do not be upset about the boy or your slave wife. Do all that Sarah is telling you because through Isaac your descendants will be counted.
But I will also make a nation of the descendants of Hagar’s son because he is your son, too.”13But I will also make the son of the slave wife into a great nation, for he is your descendant too."
So Abraham got up early the next morning, prepared food and a container of water, and strapped them on Hagar’s shoulders. Then he sent her away with their son, and she wandered aimlessly in the wilderness of Beersheba.14Early in the morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He put them on her shoulders, gave her the child, and sent her away. So she went wandering aimlessly through the wilderness of Beer Sheba.
When the water was gone, she put the boy in the shade of a bush.15When the water in the skin was gone, she shoved the child under one of the shrubs.
Then she went and sat down by herself about a hundred yards away. “I don’t want to watch the boy die,” she said, as she burst into tears.16Then she went and sat down by herself across from him at quite a distance, about a bowshot away; for she thought, "I refuse to watch the child die." So she sat across from him and wept uncontrollably.
But God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, “Hagar, what’s wrong? Do not be afraid! God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.17But God heard the boy's voice. The angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and asked her, "What is the matter, Hagar? Don't be afraid, for God has heard the boy's voice right where he is crying.
Go to him and comfort him, for I will make a great nation from his descendants.”18Get up! Help the boy up and hold him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation."
Then God opened Hagar’s eyes, and she saw a well full of water. She quickly filled her water container and gave the boy a drink.19Then God enabled Hagar to see a well of water. She went over and filled the skin with water, and then gave the boy a drink.
And God was with the boy as he grew up in the wilderness. He became a skillful archer,20God was with the boy as he grew. He lived in the wilderness and became an archer.
and he settled in the wilderness of Paran. His mother arranged for him to marry a woman from the land of Egypt. Abraham’s Covenant with Abimelech21He lived in the wilderness of Paran. His mother found a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
About this time, Abimelech came with Phicol, his army commander, to visit Abraham. “God is obviously with you, helping you in everything you do,” Abimelech said.22At that time Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, said to Abraham, "God is with you in all that you do.
“Swear to me in God’s name that you will never deceive me, my children, or any of my descendants. I have been loyal to you, so now swear that you will be loyal to me and to this country where you are living as a foreigner.”23Now swear to me right here in God's name that you will not deceive me, my children, or my descendants. Show me, and the land where you are staying, the same loyalty that I have shown you."
Abraham replied, “Yes, I swear to it!”24Abraham said, "I swear to do this."
Then Abraham complained to Abimelech about a well that Abimelech’s servants had taken by force from Abraham’s servants.25But Abraham lodged a complaint against Abimelech concerning a well that Abimelech's servants had seized.
“This is the first I’ve heard of it,” Abimelech answered. “I have no idea who is responsible. You have never complained about this before.”26"I do not know who has done this thing," Abimelech replied. "Moreover, you did not tell me. I did not hear about it until today."
Abraham then gave some of his sheep, goats, and cattle to Abimelech, and they made a treaty.27Abraham took some sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelech. The two of them made a treaty.
But Abraham also took seven additional female lambs and set them off by themselves.28Then Abraham set seven ewe lambs apart from the flock by themselves.
Abimelech asked, “Why have you set these seven apart from the others?”29Abimelech asked Abraham, "What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs that you have set apart?"
Abraham replied, “Please accept these seven lambs to show your agreement that I dug this well.”30He replied, "You must take these seven ewe lambs from my hand as legal proof that I dug this well."
Then he named the place Beersheba (which means “well of the oath”), because that was where they had sworn the oath.31That is why he named that place Beer Sheba, because the two of them swore an oath there.
After making their covenant at Beersheba, Abimelech left with Phicol, the commander of his army, and they returned home to the land of the Philistines.32So they made a treaty at Beer Sheba. Then Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, returned to the land of the Philistines.
Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba, and there he worshiped the LORD, the Eternal God.33Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beer Sheba. There he worshiped the LORD, the eternal God.
And Abraham lived as a foreigner in Philistine country for a long time.34So Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines for quite some time.
