Romans 1:6: Our call to Jesus Christ?
How does Romans 1:6 affirm our calling to belong to Jesus Christ?

Context of the Call

Romans 1:6: “And you also are among those called to belong to Jesus Christ.”

• “You also” extends the privilege of verses 1–5 beyond Paul to every believer.

• “Called” (Greek: klētos) is a divine summons—God initiates, we respond (cf. Romans 8:30).

• The goal of that summons is clear: not merely to know about Christ, but “to belong to” Him—personal, relational, covenantal.

What “Belong” Really Means

• Ownership: “You are not your own; you were bought at a price” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

• Union: “Whoever is united with the Lord is one spirit with Him” (1 Corinthians 6:17).

• Security: “My sheep listen to My voice… no one will snatch them out of My hand” (John 10:27-28).

• Family: “Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts” (Galatians 4:6-7).

The Certainty of the Call

Romans 8:30—those He predestined, He also called, justified, glorified.

1 Corinthians 1:9—“God, who has called you into fellowship with His Son… is faithful.”

2 Timothy 1:9—“He has saved us and called us with a holy calling… according to His own purpose and grace.”

1 Thessalonians 5:24—“The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.”

Our New Identity in Christ

• Chosen people, royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9).

• Citizens of heaven (Philippians 3:20).

• Branches abiding in the true Vine (John 15:5).

• Members of one body (Ephesians 4:4).

Living Out Our Belonging

• Walk worthy of the calling (Ephesians 4:1).

• Abide daily in His Word and love (John 15:4, 10).

• Pursue holiness: “As obedient children… be holy in all you do” (1 Peter 1:14-16).

• Love the family—“Love one another deeply, from a pure heart” (1 Peter 1:22).

• Bear witness: we belong to Him, so we speak of Him (Acts 1:8; 2 Corinthians 5:20).

Encouragement for Today

• Your relationship with Christ rests on His call, not your performance.

• Because you belong to Him, nothing—“neither death nor life… nor anything else in all creation”—can separate you from His love (Romans 8:38-39).

• Live confidently, gratefully, and boldly, knowing the One who called you holds you fast.
