Show repentance like Zacchaeus?
How can we demonstrate repentance and restitution like Zacchaeus in our lives?

The Turning Point in Zacchaeus’ House (Luke 19:9)

“Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son of Abraham.’ ”

• Moments earlier, Zacchaeus pledged: “Look, Lord, half of my possessions I give to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone, I will repay fourfold.”

• The Lord’s declaration of salvation was tied directly to Zacchaeus’ visible repentance and planned restitution.

What Genuine Repentance Looks Like

• Change of heart — sorrow over sin (2 Corinthians 7:10).

• Change of mind — agreeing with God’s verdict on sin (Psalm 51:3-4).

• Change of direction — turning from wrongdoing toward obedience (Acts 26:20).

• Evidence (fruit) that matches the confession (Luke 3:8).

Restitution: Putting Love into Action

Scripture repeatedly couples repentance with concrete steps to right past wrongs:

• Old Testament law required restoring what was taken plus additional compensation (Leviticus 6:1-5; Exodus 22:1).

• John the Baptist urged tax collectors to collect no more than authorized (Luke 3:12-13).

• Paul instructed thieves to “steal no longer, but rather labor… so he may have something to share with the one in need” (Ephesians 4:28).

• James tied living faith to practical deeds (James 2:15-17).

Practical Ways to Follow Zacchaeus’ Pattern Today

1. Examine Relationships

• Ask the Spirit to spotlight anyone you have wronged financially, verbally, or relationally.

2. Confess Specifically

• Own the offense without excuses (Proverbs 28:13; 1 John 1:9).

3. Make Restitution Promptly

• Repay what was taken or damaged.

• Add reasonable interest or an extra gift when feasible, reflecting Zacchaeus’ “fourfold” spirit.

4. Go Beyond Money

• Restore reputations you harmed through gossip—speak truth in their favor.

• Invest time and resources to serve those affected by your actions.

5. Walk in Ongoing Generosity

• Giving “half of my possessions” shows a heart freed from greed.

• Regular, cheerful giving (2 Corinthians 9:7) guards against sliding back.

6. Stay Accountable

• Share your commitments with a mature believer who can encourage follow-through (Hebrews 10:24-25).

Promises for the Repentant

• Forgiveness and cleansing (1 John 1:9).

• Restoration of joy (Psalm 51:12).

• Clear conscience before God and people (Acts 24:16).

• Testimony that draws others toward Christ—“salvation has come to this house” (Luke 19:9).
